What's up with that? I mean, as I look around, I am on this path toward naturopathy. Everybody I know or meet is going toward nursing or doctoring or acupuncturing, or working as a massage therapist, or treating addicts, or teaching yoga or meditation or nutrition, or opening up a practice, or getting a new certification, or writing a book about all the important stuff they've learned in life. We're all doing it. Some are ahead of others, but we're all going the same direction, like lemmings. Everybody's got a web page. Everybody's self-promoting, wanting to be the guru, wanting to be paid for what we know. We all are hip and cool. What next?
I wonder when the day will come that there's no money for what we know and can communicate, and the matter becomes what can we DO. Besides teach. Who was it that said those who can't do, teach? And why is it that my life is full of gurus or every stripe?? Or is it that my life is full of entrepreneurs, those who have the smarts to separate a sucker from his money for no more than an idea or an experience? And what in life is worth more than an idea or experience? And are they actually making a living with all this purveying of insight? Am I in a bubble? I must be in a tiny little cultural bubble.
I know I'm going around in circles. Seems to be status quo.
The question is, how does a guru dress? And how sincere does the smile really have to be? Because after a while, all those phoney blissed out guru smiles really get tired. It's hard to maintain the appearance of enlightenment. A lot of work, and the veneer is full of gaps.

QotD: Buddha on Body-Centered Mindfulness
Aug. 22nd, 2010 04:51 pmThere is one thing that, when cultivated and regularly practiced,
leads to deep spiritual intention, to peace,
to mindfulness and clear comprehension, to vision and knowledge,
to a happy life here and now,
and to the culmination of wisdom and awakening.
And what is that one thing? It is mindfulness centered on the body.
-- The Buddha, from the Satipatthana Sutta

Macy's is my Office
Jul. 29th, 2010 05:23 pmMet a girlfriend here about 2pm today and it's almost 5pm and I'm still here. It has been good just to set up my computer and answer my phone when it rings, to catch up on the lists that are in my journal. I've also bumped into a couple of old friends since this coffee shop is such a crossroads. I just pounded a big carbo-loading gluten-free pastry because I'm going climbing at the rock gym this evening with a couple of girlfriends, and I want to have some energy. I have been losing weight since I've been here, eating lightly because it is summer and feels good. I have only a few more days in AZ before I must drive back to OR because my trip permit expires.

My Student Loan
Jun. 5th, 2010 08:01 amFunny, I feel better after studying the details of my student loan repayment agreement. I will do what I am able, I will serve, I will work hard. I am already good at paying bills on time; if it is possible I will do it. If it is not, well, so be it.
Behind the cut is government text---some of what I'm signing off on for my student loan. I am happy to learn that the loan is forgiven if I die (my family is not on the hook), though if I were to get married my husband would influence the governmental decision about how much I should be able to pay. That's sort of a bummer but I wasn't anywhere near getting hitched anyway. Also learned that if I default the entire amount becomes immediately due (nice joke) and then all they do is garnish wages and keep my tax returns....makes the Patch Adams approach somewhat more appealing.

Celtic Buddhism
Mar. 28th, 2010 06:09 pmhttp://www.celticbuddhism.org/
This sounds like the sort of Buddhism I could espouse. They encourage everyone to develop a daily meditation practice. But overall the religion is so "unstructured" that other Buddhist groups are concerned. And the Celts are known for their paganism.
