Downward facing dog aka Adho Mukha Svasana. Re-invigorates the person who has settled into a slouch. Enlivens the gaze. Practice for at least five minutes after 4 hours of sitting. Ok to play with it, go into Wild Thing or whatever variation makes you happy. Try getting around on all fours--feet and hands, no knees. The dog knows how. The heart is the center for this asana.

What do you think? Have you ever fallen into that pit where you had no "real" life and your entire life existed through a keyboard and screen? Have you found your way back into the land of living and breathing? Have you discovered your body? Are you OK being alone with yourself??

Got me started thinking about this (again):
http://vimeo.com/70534716

I had a housemate once who would become completely obsessed with a new video game and play it continuously until he had completed all the levels. It took a couple months for him to master Grand Theft Auto. He took me for a ride in it. Our virtual reality was shared in living and breathing space, and he was not a lost cause. I don't think. I hope not.

I have a friend who lives a good fraction of her life in second life. She is married in this life and has a significant other in second life. Her 2nd life SO is known to her and her husband. He has a wife and kids. They visit together, eat icecream, break ankles, breathe the same air. Second life has merged with first life.

I have a sister whose occupation is building things for the second world. That is, she obtains or develops images and sounds that she can sell for virtual money. Her reality is beyond my comprehension, except that when she is there beside me she is just as solidly herself as she has ever been, with a sharpened wit.

I have a boyfriend who barely exists on the internet. I told him how many fb friends I have now and he laughed at me. I think he is afraid that I will go where my sister went, or my friend. He likes to exercise and play his guitar and garden and read. Doing all those other things sounds far better than this. I'm outta here.

Being a geek is all about
being honest about what you enjoy and
not being afraid to demonstrated that affection.
It means never having to play it cool
about how much you like something.
It's basically a license to proudly emote
on a somewhat childish level
rather than behave like a supposed adult.
Being a geek is extremely liberating.

A lot of people in our industry haven't had very diverse experiences. So they don't have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one's understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.

Economy/Business News Alert: Apple surpasses Exxon to become world's largest company
August 9, 2011 1:35:58 PM
----------------------------------------

Apple overtook Exxon Mobil as the world’s most valuable company Tuesday, as the computer company’s stock continued to defy a slowing market.

The changing of the guard is due in part to a market slowdown that has depressed oil prices and taken Exxon Mobil stock down significantly. But the switch is also a testament to Apple’s gravity-defying growth.

This is about how search engines such as google and networking sites such as facebook select for us what we will see based on what we have clicked on before. It appears to me that this limits our exposure to novel ideas, and funnels us into thought tunnels, ie dogma. Interestingly, I receive political ads from every direction, perhaps because I have found good candidates on all sides. I click both ways. On many spectrums. I wonder what google and facebook are NOT showing me.

(but not associated with anxiety)

"People who are susceptible to depression are already more prone to social isolation and withdrawal and therefore more likely to develop problematic Internet usage because the Internet provides an outlet for them," Dr. Christakis observed. "So the findings from the study are highly plausible, and because it was longitudinal and adjusted for baseline levels of depression and Internet use, the findings are both novel and robust."

| "Dislike" Button Scam Hits Facebook Users |
| from the i-dislike-this dept. |

+----------------------------------------------------------+

An anonymous reader writes "A message saying 'I just got the Dislike
button, so now I can dislike all of your dumb posts lol!!' is spreading
rapidly on Facebook, tempting unsuspecting users into believing that they
will be able to "dislike" posts as well as "like" them. However,
[0]security researchers say that it is just the latest 'survey scam',
tricking Facebook users into into giving a rogue Facebook application
permission to access their profile, and posting spam messages from their
account. The rogue application requires victims to complete an online
survey (which makes money for the scammers) before ultimately redirecting
to a Firefox browser add-on for a Facebook dislike button developed by
FaceMod. "As far as we can tell, FaceMod aren't connected with the scam —
their browser add-on is simply being used as bait," says Sophos security
blogger Graham Cluley."

Haven't been posting because my laptop isn't letting me. It says it's connected but no websites come up using either firefox or chrome. So I'm in the library right now. Got in a few hours with the lady doc in Sedona today, more tomorrow. Been visiting friends around Flag. For some reason it feels like home. This is a pretty cool town. But I only get 30 minutes free internet at the library so I'm back to email triage. Hope you guys are well.

On Saturday night I accidentally deleted internet explorer from my computer, and spent all day Sunday internet-free. I now understand that I am an addict, and I need to take measures to moderate my internet usage. I got so much done on Sunday!!! It was wonderful. =-]

I've been contemplating the acquisition of a starter EMR program lately, so that I can get proficient with it prior to starting my practice. Painfully, it seems that Walmart has the deals on what I want. Hmmmm. And there are a lot of other downsides. Naturopaths don't get medicare reimbursement anyway. But I still think I will have to try it. I can revert to the old fashioned pen and paper method if needed. I confess, I have also been contemplating what to do about malpractice insurance. I am greatly inspired by docs who practice without it. It definitely changes your practice. What do you guys think of all that?

No doctor can ignore the growing pressures to start using an EMR. With the Obama administration avidly promoting healthcare information technology, and tens of thousands of dollars at stake in incentives and future penalties for doctors, more physicians will be implementing EMRs in the coming years. Under the recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, physicians who demonstrate meaningful use of EMR by 2011 will be eligible for full federal subsidies of up to $44,000. Failure to implement EMR by 2014 may also result in increased malpractice premiums and increased exposure to malpractice claims, as well as a reduction in Medicare reimbursement, beginning in 2015.

Drew blood from a classmate again today. I keep making the same mistake, that is that I insert the needle into the vein well enough, but then my hand is unsteady and I back it out a little when I should be threading it into the vein. I caught myself today and kept the needle in the vein well enough to get two vials of blood. The classmate who punctured me also got two vials, so it was a success. At the end of this quarter we have a proficiency exam on venipuncture. I always feel quite stressed after doing a blood draw.
