QotD: Awakening
Dec. 3rd, 2014 01:42 pmThe awakening to the mystery of life is a revolutionary event; in it an old world is destroyed so that a new and better one may take its place, and all things are affected by the change. We ourselves have become mysterious strangers in our own eyes and tremblingly we ask ourselves who we are, whence we came, whither we are bound. Are we the being who is called by our name, whom we thought we knew so well in the past? Are we the form we see in the mirror, our body, offspring of our parents? Who, then, is it that feels and thinks within us, that wills and struggles, plans and dreams, that can oppose and control this physical body which we thought to be ourselves? We wake up to realize that we have never known ourselves, that we have lived as in a blind dream of ceaseless activity in which there was never a moment of self recollection.

QotD: Never Give Up
Dec. 12th, 2011 08:37 pmNever give up on something you can't go a single day without thinking about.

(I am suspicious of the word "never". It goes right in with "always" and "should". And I notice that after a while, the thought occurrences of a person who is gone do decrease. Maybe never completely gone, but at least not so torturous. I do however think that this quote, as a mantra, is destructive by encouraging obsessive thought, and will impede the process of letting go, and hence I apologize for posting it. I just had to.)

Chattooga Old School
Jan. 17th, 2011 12:47 pmThis video is of people from a Georgia paddling club running a whitewater river in the classic craft of the 1970's and 80's. That is when I began running rivers, in the same region. The equipment has changed substantially. The river is still the same. The video is mostly filmed on the Chattooga, where I spent years paddle raft guiding and safety boating (kayak).
The Chattooga river still shows up in my dreams. Section IV of the Chattooga is where I became conscious, woke up, began to see past the tip of my own nose and into the people and world around me. There's some nostalgia and a certain electricity for me in seeing these old boats on familiar waters with such southern-sounding rock playing in the background. This video is inside my head already.
Contrast this with the trailer for a more current whitewater video here and you'll know why I backed down from the cutting edge. No need to go anywhere near THAT edge. I'm too old and too female for that.

Flood Dream
Jun. 18th, 2010 09:29 pmI should have written down my dream this morning. It was a vivid one, and my grandmother was in it. This evening as I think back on it, I don't know that I have ever dreamed about my grandmother before. What I can remember about the dream:

dream: hand amputation and arm cancer
Dec. 23rd, 2008 07:58 amI am hanging out at a roadside pullout with lots of hippies, somewhere in the south. There is a river down below, but the crowd isn't interested in the river. Instead everybody is hanging out with the cars and smoking dope. They're a friendly crowd and I am right at home. I am doing something, and when I finish I decide to head north, but instead I drive south. I go south a few miles before checking the map, turning around, and heading back toward more familiar grounds.

What I did for the Weekend
Oct. 27th, 2008 07:58 amI had a pleasant weekend in good weather. Worked my hydro shift Saturday morning, then in the afternoon went up to Austin Hotsprings on the Clackamas River with M. The area of the springs has been recently rearranged by the owners using a bulldozer. The pools have all been filled with gravel and there are new concrete barriers blocking entry to the place. Rumor has it that a woman and two children were badly burned there about a month ago. Apparently the owner was trying to minimize his liability by destroying the pools, but somebody had already built a new pool and while we were there we were working on a second one. You can't stop a hot springs from coming up out of the ground, and you can't stop people from trying to get in it. People stay clothed at this hotsprings because it is so close to the road, and because a lot of Russians use it, and they are conservative.

Dream: The Tiger
Sep. 27th, 2007 03:12 pmThere is a tiger in the basement. She is a young tiger. I'm staying at someone else's house, and I ask the residents whose tiger she is. They say that she is nobody's tiger, she was left behind. She's 90-100 pounds, I'd guess, agile and athletic. I don't want to tackle her, but she isn't interested in me. She is long and lean and beautiful.

Dream: Stealing a Car and more
Sep. 13th, 2007 09:40 amIn the dream I don't remember why but Terry & Terry tell me to get in this car and drive it, so I do. I am just getting started driving it and this guy (I think he is the owner of the car) jumps onto the side of the car and tries to climb in the driver's side window (into my lap). I push him gently and he falls down so that he is hanging on the door. He's still trying to get in and I am afraid so I push harder and hit the gas at the same time. He falls off the side of the car and I hear a crunch when he hits the ground.
