"Fragrance" Stinks
May. 24th, 2010 08:04 pmWay back in 1973 the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act was passed, requiring that the ingredients in products be listed so we'd know what we're buying. Fragrances were specifically exempted from the law, because perfume makers would never let anyone know what was in their scents. Since then, under market pressures, companies have begun to use this loophole to put all manner of toxic materials into products. Any scented personal care product you purchase may contain hormonally active substances that could damage a developing fetus or reduce your fertility, trigger allergies, or be toxic in undiscovered ways. Many of these chemicals have not been tested at all. So use "fragrance" at your own risk, and please don't go perfuming yourself around pregnant women. Unless...you use pure essential oils from beneficial plants.

Progesterone as Emergency Tx for TBI
Oct. 31st, 2009 05:44 pmTBI = traumatic brain injury
--1.5 to 2 million people in the U.S. sustain a TBI each year
--TBI causes 50,000 deaths and 80,000 new cases of long-term disability per year in US
--major cause of death and disability among children and military personnel.
--one article said no new medicines or therapies for TBA have come to light in over 30 years (I doubt this)
--it occurs to me to wonder if we gave progesterone prophylactically to boxers and football players, would they keep playing and retain more smarts? or would they quit? it hasn't been studied yet. =-]
( notes on promising new progesterone research, and on excitotoxicity and glutamate )

Wanted a Baby
Jul. 26th, 2009 11:27 amLast week here in Portland, Oregon a 19 year old girl made a big mistake. She had told her boyfriend that she was pregnant when she actually wasn't. So desperate was she to get a child that she advertised on Craigslist that she had baby clothing to give away. Another young woman whose child was nearly due showed up to get the free clothing. The non-pregnant girl knocked her on the head, cut out the baby with a kitchen knife, and stuffed the dying woman's body into hiding. Then the baby started to die too, so she called 911. They asked her when she had given birth and she said "sometime yesterday". Needless to say, she's busted. The price of her selfish gory violence: three lives, theirs and hers too.
Today I go to the baby shower of a friend from school who is nearly due. I hope she hasn't heard this story. I am certainly not going to tell it.

These days it's hard for a mother to know what is best for her child. The modern medical machine has its ideas, and it will tell you what is best, but can you trust it? There are many who argue that you cannot, that the drugs and vaccines that are pushed on you are not necessarily in the best interests of your children. So how do you find out what to do? How do you know who to trust?

Midwives and Passports
Jun. 12th, 2009 08:40 amAs of this week, you cannot cross the Mexico-US or Canada-US border without a passport. There are many people who routinely cross the border who do not have passports. As of this week, those people have to choose a country, and stay there. Too bad if their family is on the other side from their job.

The bad news is that this increase is only the beginning--the curve is headed for the ceiling. I find it remarkable that my current Harvard-educated nutrition teacher talks about the health value of eating fish without expressing concern about mercury content. The research hasn't penetrated his consciousness yet. But it will.
I've stopped eating sushi since I tested with high mercury, arsenic, and very high lead levels, about a year ago. I have no idea where all my heavy metals came from, but I did eat a lot of sushi for a while there. I did a round of oral DMSA chelation. I'm going to retest soon to see if how much that treatment decreased my body load.

CPD Endocrine Review: Thyroid
May. 10th, 2009 02:44 pmWhere is the thyroid?
anterior neck C5-T1
though it can slip down the neck and into the thorax in some older folks
How much does a normal thyroid weigh?
10-20grams
What nutrient is concentrated in the thyroid?
iodine
What nutrient is it important to take if you are exposed to a nuclear radiation accident?
iodine, in the form of potassium iodide tablets, seaweed, bladderwrack
Japanese after Hiroshima/Nagasaki survived better with big seaweed diet
immediately, to prevent the thyroid from uptaking too much radioactive iodine
