“Although the bromide ion is widely distributed in nature, the main route of exposure in humans stems from bromide residues in food commodities as a result of the abundant use of bromide-containing pesticides, like methylbromide and ethylene dibromide, for soil fumigation in intensive horticulture and for postharvest treatment.” --van Leeuwen

He was elected governor of Illinois in 2002, and in January 2003 suddenly the inmates got a new diet. Soy protein is cheaper than meat and diary, so the state could save money by feeding it to the prisoners. If meat is served, it is mixed with about 2/3 soy protein. Of course the Department of Corrections is costly to run. And Archer Daniels Midland (soy supplier) was a major contributor to Blagojevich's campaign. But is it really fair to feed prisoners a food-substitute that is increasingly demonstrated to be have toxicity, as well as being hormonally active?

How do you know where it is? In the US, the four foods most likely to contain genes that nature didn't intend are corn, soy, canola and cotton. Most autistic children have allergies to both corn and soy. Soy and canola have been heavily marketed as "health food" and many people are still convinced that "low carb" foods containing soy lecithin and canola oil are parts of a healthy diet. Corn has become an ingredient is almost all processed foods, in the form of high fructose corn syrup and other corn derivatives. And cotton seed oil is another cheap filler ingredient that is ubiquitous. So basically any multi-ingredient food from the grocery store is likely to contain genetically modified ingredients.

This is a true story of a military man who grew breasts and went to four doctors before someone figured out that his soymilk habit was the problem. A case report on his condition was published in the May/June 2008 issue Endocrine Practice. The article also addresses the popular conception that soy is "healthy", and the fact that soy products are used in infant formulas--to the detriment of the developing children.

I haven't been overly worried about GM foods myself, but Mercola has educated me yet again. In 1998 the occurrence of allergic reactions to soybeans in the UK increased by 50%. GM soy products entered the US market late in 1996. The issue seems to be that they're putting genes from peanuts and other common allergens into soy.

But the interesting thing is that the genes can cross from the soy into bacteria---this article considers the possibility that the allergen genes are entering our normal stomach bacteria and causing long term effects such as irritable bowel syndrome.

So you could be having an allergic reaction to a food that you didn't even eat. That food could have become part of your natural gut flora.

Time to rev up our gardens. This is getting out of hand.

This time it's soymilk --- here's an interesting report on how it is manufactured:

And here are Mercola's comments on that article:

I stopped consuming soy about 2 years ago after a survey of the literature. I am surprised at how many health-minded folks are still using soy milk on their cereal and in their lattes, eating TVP in their veggie chili, tofu in their Thai food, and generally gobbling the stuff down.

Soy is used as a filler in NEARLY ALL "low carb" processed food and in most "energy" bars. The ingredient to avoid is "soy protein isolate" which as far as I can tell is indigestible for humans. It definitely gives ME a stomach ache. I avoid this stuff and check for it in any powders that I might add to a smoothie. The cheapest and best protein additive for smoothies is whey---IF you are not allergic to milk.

I just ran across a succinct list of the reasons to avoid soy at the Weston A Price Foundation website. There are also links here to the research papers themselves, if you're interested. Bottom line: if you're going to eat soy, don't eat it with every meal, and avoid TVP at all times. That shit's toxic. DON'T consider it a meat substitute. If you don't eat meat, eat cheese and eggs to get the amino acids and fats you need.

I do still eat edamame, which is fresh green soybeans sucked from the hull, raw or lightly steamed. Not with every meal! But good sometimes with sushi.
