Worldwide 4-H has over 6.8 million members in 80 countries. Now Monsanto is funding 4-H--I would suspect in exchange for the chance to mold young minds. So far they have provided the children with pro-GMO booklets about the "benefits" of genetically modified organisms. If Monsanto can get inside the heads of youth, they can change attitudes about GMO's society-wide. It will work if there is not an equal and opposite force educating the children about the hazards of genetic modification of our food supply. You can be part of that force. The last thing we need is an entire planet beholden to an evil empire which makes seeds infertile.

A yes vote would require labeling of genetically modified foods and food ingredients. If you don't live in California, you may not know what a big deal this is. The Yes effort is a grassroots effort that I learned about by way of my friends in Cali and from Dr Mercola. There are six major funders of the No campaign; they are the six largest pesticide companies in the world. Fifty countries label GMO foods, but the US lags behind because of our close ties to megabusiness.

The latest news is that the pesticide companies (Monsanto et al) are attacking Dr Mercola personally. Dr Mercola's post details the plethora of nonsense they have propagated in order to confuse voters.

Unfortunately, when people are uncertain they tend to vote NO, but what we really need is a YES vote on this one. So tell your friends in California. It will do them no harm to require GMO products to be labelled, and having the ability to choose which foods they consume would do good.

Did you know that they have genetically engineered corn to produce insecticides? Yes. You can't wash THAT off.

Here's a list of the Food and Beverage Companies which sell organic/natural products while simultaneously giving mountains of cash to the Monsanto-driven campaign opposing GMO labeling in California (Prop 37):

Kellogg’s (Kashi, Bear Naked, Morningstar Farms)
General Mills (Muir Glen, Cascadian Farm, Larabar)
Dean Foods (Horizon, Silk, White Wave)
Smucker’s (R.W. Knudsen, Santa Cruz Organic)
Coca-Cola (Honest Tea, Odwalla)
Safeway (“O” Organics)
Kraft (Boca Burgers and Back to Nature)
Con-Agra (Orville Redenbacher’s Organic, Hunt’s Organic, Lightlife)
PepsiCo (Naked Juice, Tostito’s Organic, Tropicana Organic)

Let's bust 'em one where it counts: in the pocket book. The only trustworthy organic product is the one you make in your kitchen from known whole food sources. OCA and Mercola are both calling for this boycott, and I for one am going to participate. It's a good season to eat from the garden anyway. My only concern is what I'm going to mix with my bourbon. =-]

WFM knows full well that federal regulations on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) do not require pre-market safety testing, nor labeling; and that even federal judges have repeatedly ruled that so-called government "oversight" of Frankencrops such as Monsanto's sugar beets and alfalfa is basically a farce.

If you put a label on genetically engineered food you might as well put a skull and crossbones on it.

As you may guess, in the US GM food is still stealth...

The Chaco study shows that child cancers increased dramatically in a small Argentinian town between 2000 and 2009, during the same time period that "Roundup Ready" agriculture boomed in the area. (If you don't know yet about "Roundup Ready" crops, they are genetically engineered to survive being coated with Roundup, which kills everything else.) And to the surprise of the public health officials, the people got mad. Real mad.

How do you know where it is? In the US, the four foods most likely to contain genes that nature didn't intend are corn, soy, canola and cotton. Most autistic children have allergies to both corn and soy. Soy and canola have been heavily marketed as "health food" and many people are still convinced that "low carb" foods containing soy lecithin and canola oil are parts of a healthy diet. Corn has become an ingredient is almost all processed foods, in the form of high fructose corn syrup and other corn derivatives. And cotton seed oil is another cheap filler ingredient that is ubiquitous. So basically any multi-ingredient food from the grocery store is likely to contain genetically modified ingredients.

now less than 2% of US pop involved in farming
20th century pesticides, transport, high yield, low prices, good availability
plant breeding-->the green revolution
"systematize agriculture" and solve starvation problem
monoculture propagation-->disaster, potato famine in Ireland but not in Peru
97% of veggies grown at beginning of century now extinct
4 varieties of potatoes now being propagaged

HR 875 was introduced to our 111th congress by Rosa DeLauro, whose husband Stanley Greenburg works for Monsanto. The bill benefits factory farming corporations such as factory farming ops like Monsanto, ADM, Sodexo and Tyson, by stressing small farms with new regulations and potentially putting small food suppliers out of business. My guess is that the bill was written by people from inside that industry.

Monsanto is up to no good. Monsanto has been engineering corn and other crops to be infertile, such that farmers cannot plant next season from this year's seed crop!! And not only does this invention assure that the farmer must purchase seed annually, the genetically engineered corn pollenates other corn and reduces the viability of the crop world wide. Causing starvation and an increased need for people to buy seed corn. Now a Monsanto ally has introduced a bill making it a pain in the ass to grow a little bit of food on your small farm or in your back yard garden. This bill increases the regulation of small food growing operations, while letting the corporate starvation profiteer run free. We can't let this bill pass. Is there anyone out there paying attention? Are you ready to act as a citizen? We the people are up against Goliath, and we'd better pick up some stones!! Please do what you can.

POSILAC Bovine Somatotropin production will now be in the hands of another business, not Monsanto. In my view, this does absolve Monsanto any more than it guarantees the removal of growth hormones from dairy products. I wonder who owns Eli Lilly and Company, the purchasers of Posilac. This sale could just be part of the business shell game in which Monsanto hides its assets by selling them off to another part of itself. But regardless of ownership of the means of BGH production, more and more dairy product suppliers are avoiding hormone-induced milk products. The latest I heard was Yoplait has gone hormone free. Here's the story from the perspective of the Organic Consumer's Association:

Last night I went to a biochem tutoring session that I had arranged the week prior. I arranged it because I didn't know if I would be able to get all the answers to my takehome quiz, but in fact I had just understood the final question when my tutoring hour began. The tutor (Josh) and I covered my relevant questions fairly quickly, and then he asked if I knew about the grocery named Whole Foods. I said I did, and in fact that I had dropped a chunk of cash into their stock lately. That was worth a high five. He started to talk about John Mackey, president of Whole Foods, who he said I would appreciate. Having just scanned a couple of links, I find that Josh was right.
