Of course the corporations with an interest in keeping Americans in the dark (and unconcerned) about what is going on spent 3x (or more) on very slick and convincing media to get that result. But we the people are not completely ignorant or apathetic. So we vote with our dollars. I have cut out several items from my regular shopping list, and am finding good alternatives. Being flexible gives us power. Our ability to BOYCOTT companies that resist labeling laws makes it possible for influence the market. Teach your family about this, and you increase your influence.

Quite a few of the manufacturers that oppose labeling GMOs also make items that are labeled “organic”. GMO food ingredients are mostly grains grown by large scale agricultural businesses that use millions of tons of herbicides and pesticides. "Organic" foods are supposed to be free of GMO ingredients. We can reduce our intake of toxic pesticides and herbicides by eating "organic" foods, however if these GMO supporters have brands labeled organic, we need to pick and choose in order to hit them in their pocketbooks the way we want to.

I just knew that "o" organics (at safeway) wasn't a brand I wanted to buy. I am disappointed to stop buying Larabars (I was in on that when it was still a small company). There are a few others that I would sometimes buy, so this list has influenced my grocery expenditures. I hope it does too.

A few brands and products to avoid: • PepsiCo: Naked Juice, Tostito's Organic, Tropicana Organic • Kraft: Boca Burgers and Back to Nature • Safeway:"O" Organics • Coca-Cola: Honest Tea, Odwalla • General Mills: Muir Glen, Cascadian Farm, Larabar (I’ve switched to Kind bars) • Con-Agra: Orville Redenbacher's Organic, Hunt's Organic, Lightlife, Alexia • Kellogg's: Kashi, Bear Naked, Morningstar Farms, Gardenburger • Smuckers: R.W. Knudsen, Santa Cruz Organic • Unilever: Ben & Jerry's • Dean Foods: Horizon, Silk, White Wave.

If you see something in that short list that you buy every time you go to the grocery store, maybe it is time to do a little research and figure out an alternative that suits you.

Did you know that they have genetically engineered corn to produce insecticides? Yes. You can't wash THAT off.

Here's a list of the Food and Beverage Companies which sell organic/natural products while simultaneously giving mountains of cash to the Monsanto-driven campaign opposing GMO labeling in California (Prop 37):

Kellogg’s (Kashi, Bear Naked, Morningstar Farms)
General Mills (Muir Glen, Cascadian Farm, Larabar)
Dean Foods (Horizon, Silk, White Wave)
Smucker’s (R.W. Knudsen, Santa Cruz Organic)
Coca-Cola (Honest Tea, Odwalla)
Safeway (“O” Organics)
Kraft (Boca Burgers and Back to Nature)
Con-Agra (Orville Redenbacher’s Organic, Hunt’s Organic, Lightlife)
PepsiCo (Naked Juice, Tostito’s Organic, Tropicana Organic)

Let's bust 'em one where it counts: in the pocket book. The only trustworthy organic product is the one you make in your kitchen from known whole food sources. OCA and Mercola are both calling for this boycott, and I for one am going to participate. It's a good season to eat from the garden anyway. My only concern is what I'm going to mix with my bourbon. =-]

Pamela is going to build one of these. There are pictures and instructions on how to build one here:

According to Mercola the coating that's found these days on romaine lettuce is intentionally applied to increase shelf life, and it is supposed to be edible. That remains to be seen. Apparently it's on some organic lettuce as well.

WFM knows full well that federal regulations on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) do not require pre-market safety testing, nor labeling; and that even federal judges have repeatedly ruled that so-called government "oversight" of Frankencrops such as Monsanto's sugar beets and alfalfa is basically a farce.

This is the so-called food safety bill. What it actually does is secure complete control of our food supply by the corporations. A companion bill (S.3767) was recently added into it, which criminalizes food production, meaning that you could be charged with a crime for eating what you or your neighbor grows in the yard. This is insane. Family farms and ranches, community and home gardens and farmers’ markets stand to lose big. The rules that would be imposed may be reasonable to control industrialized food production, but will rapidly destroy local/organic and community food production.

The corporate powers that be would like our current congress to push it through but Senator Coburn and a few others have held it up, because they realize that it needs their full attention. It probably won't be debated until the new congress is formed, after the election. Last year they passed the House version of this bill (HR 1279) in spite of considerable citizen action against it. We can allow the corporations to control and run our nation. It will take concerted citizen action to stop it. I am not sure enough people are awake yet to see what is happening, I'm not sure enough people care to stop it. And in the final reckoning, the government can no more stop people from growing tomatoes in their yards than they can stop people from growing and smoking pot. But they can make it illegal and inconvenient and underground. They can make us into criminals by passing laws that do not serve the people, they serve only big business. This is no democracy, as long as the people are lazy overfed sheep. This is a giant corporate farm and we are the product.

S 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, may be the most dangerous bill in the history of the US. It is to our food what the bailout was to our economy, only we can live without money.

It's a sign of confidence when a health guru uses their own product. Null's Ultimate Power Meal apparently had 1,000x more vitamin D in it than it should have had. That is, two MILLION instead of two thousand IU's. It's pretty well known at this point that the AI (adequate intake of 400-600 IU) and UL (upper tolerable limit of 2000 IU) specified by the government are too low for most North Americans, but Null was definitely taking a toxic overdose. The NY Post Headline got a guffaw from me: "Putting the DIE in diet". Not that I have any ill will for Gary Null; I am happy he is getting better after 3 months of slow recovery, and sad that his kidneys may be permanently damaged. He's 65 years old, sort of late in life to take such hard hits.

Follow this link to send a comment to the FDA about how they're planning to allow a big list of non-organic ingredients in products labelled "USDA ORGANIC":

The Organic Consumers Organization is often how I find out about what's going on. Agribusiness would love to irradiate ("nuke") all our food, because that way they can avoid things like e-coli on spinach. Never mind the damage it does to the food, and the strange chemicals it produces. And agribusiness has been trying for years to adjust the meaning of "organic" to suit themselves. Foods labelled "organic" are showing up everywhere--but the businesses are circumventing organic standards as avidly as they play "loophole" with the tax code. Now there's the recent move by the FDA to regulate supplements. There are many ways that the pharmaceuticals and agribusiness are trying to corner us into buying their products.

Anyway, they have a great bi-weekly newsletter distributed by email, I recommend it to anyone who wants to eat well, and wants to see small farms and legitimately organic food survive:
