Declaration of Independence
Jul. 4th, 2009 09:07 pmThe explosions are constant now and the sirens are temporarily silenced. The pets are in hiding. The show is amazing, terrific, colorful, people are applauding within a block of here. I am tired, and headed for bed soon. The noise will not keep me up.
I remember hearing about that day--7/4/1776--that the representatives of America's 13 original colonies announced to the world that they were free, and that they would no longer accept outside rule. The gall of them. Just saying HEY man you can't boss me around anymore. Anymore if an American patriot acts with such independence, he finds himself listed as a terrorist on some government watchlist.

Political Vocabulary
Mar. 28th, 2009 10:36 amOCO = overseas contingency operations budget = the new way of referring to war spending in the Obama administration. These appropriations are officially in the US budget, and will no longer be slipped in as "emergency spending", as the Shrubbery did throughout their reign. Obama's getting hammered for his big budget but those so-called Republicans (more like fascists in my view) are having a hard time getting honest about how much was spent that was not in the budget in the past.
sedative = A substance that reduces nervous system activity hence reduces mental activity including irritability, excitement, or nervousness, and the physical actions that result from such mental states. Sedatives do not act directly to suppress bodily movements, and are hence different from tranquilizers. Sedatives may be classified according to which organ systems are most affected, ie: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, reproductive, musculoskeletal, etc. Aka: calmative. Some herbal sedatives include: Valerian (Valeriana officinalis), lady's slipper (Cyripedium pubescens), Wild Lettuce (Latuca virosa).

Sep. 11th, 2008 12:31 pmbafflegab = jargon = "a peculiar kind of language that is unique to public servants who are trying very hard to justify their existence" used in the title of a recent Canadian government report entitled Emergency Preparedness in Canada: How the Fine Arts of Procrastination and Bafflegab Hobble the People Who Will Be Trying to Save You When Things Get Really Bad. According to one of the study authors, Sen. Colin Kenny, the agnecies' jargon serves merely to mask the fact that nothing has to be done.

Last Rowing Class, and Vocabababble: Erg
Sep. 4th, 2008 07:37 amLast night was the final rowing class and my energy was so low that I laid on my back on the concrete floor, waiting for class to begin. I knew from my bike ride to the boathouse that the wind was up on the river, and the instructor was saying just that. She had us work out for a half hour on the "ergs" while a couple people carried the remainder of the oars to the dock. She said that an "erg" is a measure of work. She told us to set the ergs on the lowest possible setting, but I was disobedient, because I am so strong that if I have it set on the lowest setting, there isn't enough resistance and my stroke suffers, my rhythm is lost. I cranked for about 15 minutes, getting my heart rate up and getting a good burn in my lower core.
