This engineer (ironically named Mix) knew that the 4/20/10 BP oil geyser was bigger than the company had told the media, and they're arresting him for deleting 300 text messages on that subject. Not to be totally uppity but I KNEW at the time that the guesstimated amount was likely to be false and low. Anybody with half a brain knew the number was not likely to be the eventual truth. They just picked a nice round number and were sticking to it. It sorta sickens me to see an engineer go down for this. Somebody higher on the food chain is more responsible, and for more heinous crimes.

This might end up being important:

Under the deal announced Friday, Verizon will pay $3.6 billion to Comcast, Time Warner and Bright House Networks to use a swath of cellphone airwaves that the cable giants own but do not use. That would cement Verizon’s status as the dominant wireless carrier and give it access to valuable spectrum at a time when its primary rival — AT&T — is struggling to expand its network through a controversial proposed merger with T-Mobile.

I'm between an iphone and a cheap prepaid phone. I now have an LG. I could live without texting though it is cool. My finances are uncertain, so it is tempting to live on the cheap to sustain. On the other hand, it is tempting to get the tools that are likely to make me most successful, and the iphone could be one of those tools. What say you?

Looks like cell phone use could be slightly protective against gliomas!?
I doubt it but it's interesting.... I wonder how reliable interview data is...

I was pleased to find that I am not the only one who doesn't want to pay extra for the ability to text, and doesn't appreciate the fact that if someone texts me (regardless of my desires) I get charged for it.

Jen and Eugene were in the hotsprings when we got there yesterday, Suz and M and I drove down there, a goodly ways down I-5 to highway 22 east and out to a town called "Detroit". I drove Suzanne's vehicle, because M's car is small and she drives like a Californian. I'm not sure how long it took us to get to the trailhead, but it was something like 2 hours. The trailhead is a pullout by the road, not far from the resort.

--> Chronic Fatigue Syndrome!??

I hadn't put all this together but Mercola did. This is why I keep up with what this doc is thinking. So here I am sitting in front of my wireless system, knowing that I have high mercury levels. There are so many electromagnetic fields in the city! Mercola says that heavy metal deposits, which tend to localize in the brain (and a few other places) cause electromagnetic radiation to do more damage there. Maybe this is what is causing my foggy headedness and fatigue?? Anyway, this is news to me: "when you expose a bacterial culture to abnormal electromagnetic fields, the bacteria believe they are being attacked by your immune system and start producing much more virulent toxins as a protective mechanism."

To surf the links and read all about it, see Mercola's page at http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/06/21/are-you-allergic-to-wireless-internet.aspx?source=nl

It turns out the type of cancer caused by cell phones is a glioma. Glia are the support cells of the CNS. I am definitely cancelling my cell phone contract this August, and switching to a land line.

I've posted before about the recent dramatic reduction in bee populations across the North American continent. It has spread to Europe, now. I love to eat honey, and the folks at the market tell me every time I buy it that the prices are going to increase. The loss of bees is bad for all agriculture, though, because they are major pollinators. The loss of bees is probably bad for all living things, it is a disruption of equilibrium which will have unforseeable cascading effects. One of the most predictable effects: food shortages.

"The West Coast is thought to have lost 60 per cent of its commercial bee population, with 70 per cent missing on the East Coast." in October, 2006.

Here's the NPR story on the loss of bees from 10/06:

This one explains why scientists think cell phones could be responsible for CCD, colony collapse disorder:

A couple years ago I traded in my cell phone for an internet connection, and I have not regretted that exchange. Part of the reason the cell phone drove me crazy was that I was too easy to reach for my coworkers, essentially putting me "on call" all the time. The other reason is that I started reading about the radiation of the cell phone signal rearranging molecules in our brains, and possibly causing brain cancer. Well here's a new study that makes me worry about my friends who still mainly use a mobile phone. Please minimize your cell phone use! If the side of your head starts to feel warm, it's past time to hang up.

Here's a little about what the cell phone signal does to human neural tissue:

On NPR this morning, a report says that in 2001 16% of US drivers surveyed said their next vehicle would have a manual transmission. That percentage has fallen, in spite of the fact that standard transmissions are 10-15% more fuel efficient than automatics. One commenter noted that teenagers don't want stick shifts because "they can't talk on their cell phones and drink their starbucks" while they drive. YIKES!! It is cell phone talking idiots who most often fail to notice me riding my bike wearing bright colors in full view. The report noted that many people don't know HOW to drive a stick anymore. Just like most people don't know how to grow food anymore. When the shit hits the fan in this country, it is going to be UGLY. Ignorance of basic life skills is rampant, but we all know how to use a cell phone while driving.

I had a cell phone for 5 years. I enjoyed having a communication device that was independent of my location. But then I read about increasing occurrence of brain cancers correlated with cell phone usage---the studies at the time were coming out of Japan. I also got fed up with escalating work calls on my cell. Eventually I traded the mobile for a home land line and a cable internet connection. The cost is about the same. It is because of the home internet connection that I am able to make entries in this online journal. But now I read that my home phone is just as dangerous. Imagine my chargrin.

Time to buy an old fashioned phone with a wire to the handset.

Also here's a great post on how you can get out of a cell phone contract without paying a termination fee:
