He makes a good argument for the use of nuclear power to limit the burning of fossil fuels. And he paints the US opposition to this effort as a selfish gambit to keep the world hooked on oil. There's a translation of his speech here.

The bad news is that this increase is only the beginning--the curve is headed for the ceiling. I find it remarkable that my current Harvard-educated nutrition teacher talks about the health value of eating fish without expressing concern about mercury content. The research hasn't penetrated his consciousness yet. But it will.

I've stopped eating sushi since I tested with high mercury, arsenic, and very high lead levels, about a year ago. I have no idea where all my heavy metals came from, but I did eat a lot of sushi for a while there. I did a round of oral DMSA chelation. I'm going to retest soon to see if how much that treatment decreased my body load.

When it gets hot, I like to go jump in the river. The Oregonians think the river is too dangerous, too polluted. I was repeating this viewpoint minutes ago, while sitting in a kiddy pool in my back yard with one of the young reporters who lives downstairs. She told me that in late July there was a toxic algae bloom in the Tualatin River. The Tualatin flows into the Willamette at Lake Oswego.

Public Health officials advised boaters and swimmers to stay away from it, and put up signs to warn people to keep out and keep their animals away. The USGS reports that 8-9 dogs/year die of drinking blue-green algae infested water.

According to Msgr. Gianfranco Girotti in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Catholics now have some new instructions beyond avoiding the Seven Mortal Sins. A review for those of us not fully indoctrinated:

Seven Mortal Sins
pride
envy
gluttony
greed
lust
wrath
sloth

The new instructions are to avoid the Seven Modern Vices, which are based on violating the "basic rights of human nature". I didn't find an explanation of the rights, but here are the vices:
polluting
genetic engineering
being obscenely wealthy
taking drugs
abortion
pedophilia
causing social injustic

This link takes you to a wonderful big picture explanation by Annie Leonard of what is happening on planet earth today, and how we participate. Thanks to one of my classmates who posted the link. It contained no surprises for me, so you may not have any great "Ah-ha!" yourself. For anyone who isn't convinced that our current way of life is unsustainable, this might help them understand just how urgently unsustainable our economy is. One factoid from the presentation that I hadn't previously absorbed: American happiness has been declining since the 1950's, which Annie says is about when we started "consuming". Anyway, check it out if you haven't, and pass it on to anyone who needs a straightforward explanation of what's going on.

Kashiwazaki

My birth town of Oak Ridge, Tennessee has a special (guilty but forgiven) connection to Japan. The laboratories in Oak Ridge were where the nuclear bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were created. When I visited the front page of the hometown paper this evening, there was this news Expandfrom Japan )

Mercola is no longer the only doctor who is recommending that we avoid eating fish altogether. He also says that flax seed oil does not provide adequate omega 3 oils, and that we should supplement with fish oil that has been tested and certified free of mercury. I guess I'm going to have to give up sushi.
