STILL I RISE

Maya Angelou, 1928 - 2014

You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?

Why are you beset with gloom?

‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells

Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,

With the certainty of tides,

Just like hopes springing high,

Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?

Bowed head and lowered eyes?

Shoulders falling down like teardrops,

Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?

Don’t you take it awful hard

‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines

Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?

Does it come as a surprise

That I dance like I’ve got diamonds

At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame

I rise

Up from a past that’s rooted in pain

I rise

I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,

Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

I rise

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear

I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave.

I rise

I rise

I rise.

Be soft.
Do not let the world make you hard.
Do not let pain make you hate.
Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness.
Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree,
you still believe it to be a beautiful place.

--Kurt Vonnegut.

Hating people
because of their color
is wrong

and it doesn't matter

what color

does the hating.

It's just plain wrong.

Some time when the river is ice ask me
mistakes I have made. Ask me whether
what I have done is my life. Others
have come in their slow way into
my thought, and some have tried to help
or to hurt: ask me what difference
their strongest love or hate has made.

I will listen to what you say.
You and I can turn and look
at the silent river and wait. We know
the current is there, hidden; and there
are comings and goings from miles away
that hold the stillness exactly before us.
What the river says, that is what I say.

Because Muslims, Hindus and African Animists are also made in the very likeness and image of God, to hate them is to hate God! To reject them to is to reject God and the Gospel of Christ. Whether we worship at a church, a synagogue, a mosque or a mandir, it does not matter. Whether we call God, Jesus, Adonai, Allah or Krishna, we all worship the same God of love. This truth is self-evident to all who have love and humility in their hearts!

The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.

Yesterday the Kansas crowd had a protest at Grant High school, first thing in the morning. Perhaps they did not know how well organized the queers are here. Perhaps they did not consider that in the face of hate, the Portland LGBT crowd is capable of responding with love and humor. Whatever the case, I hear that the Kansas churchies were tormented with silly gay flirtations and outrageousness. In one particular case a local man stripped off his pants, and wearing only some very short shorts went up and started complimenting one of the self-righteous about his swimmer's build. The Kansas bunch also has a series of protests scheduled at synagogues, and because they are also anti-queer, the queers are supporting the Jews in facing them down. It is a beautiful thing.

Personally, this is why I like Obama, even though I wish he'd shed the middle road position of supporting corporatocracy. He'll talk to anybody. Even the people who think that religion might well be the reason for much of the hate and violence that occurs between humans, instead of the solution to it. The right ring Xstians, with their vitriol, betray themselves. Who is more hateful?

The youtube clip below is an interesting assessment of the tea bag events on Keith Olberman's show. Olberman says the lady guest on the show is an expert on the limbic brain. I think there is some truth in what she says, that the core of Republican-Conservatism is racist. Obama is different, strange, OTHER to them. Notice the way the people in the video clip BOO at a speaker who is telling them the obvious truth that they don't want to face. It causes a kind of cognitive dissonance that makes people unpredictable and possibly dangerous. The people I talked to at the tea party events were not particularly well informed, and the ones who say they're afraid of Obama, or who think he's wrong or bad, are clearly not acquainted with the guy in the least. They are parroting something that they have learned somewhere else. Like perhaps on Fox news, or from Rush Limbaugh. My uncle is a dangerous Republican racist. I can say that because he is my uncle. So I know that I am not the only one with an uncle just like that. Yes, interesting clip here. I will probably watch it again.
My Uncle, for real.

Also, on Stockholm Syndrome: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome it's when hostages feel empathetic toward their captors, and mistake a lack of abuse for kindness. The speaker suggests that many women are in this kind of relationship with their men.

It's all the buzz.....somebody scratched swastikas and anti-gay words on walls in a new gender neutral bathroom on the 2nd floor, and in the "energy medicine" room on the 3rd floor. The gender neutral bathroom came into being because of efforts of the Queers and Allies group on campus, and the way in which it was promoted seems to have alienated a few people. The responses to an anonymous survey revealed substantial tension around the subject, and yet this tension was publicly not addressed. I did not know until today that the creation of this restroom took away the only faculty lounge. There is a plan to have a campus-wide meeting to discuss the incident and what to do about it. I can guarantee you that the perp will not be in attendance.

In this student population the assumption is that we are all environmentalists, eat organic food, ride our bikes, are liberals and progressives, and that we are nondiscriminatory toward all people including gays, other races, genders, religions. But this stereotype of the naturopathic/Chinese medicine student is just that, a stereotype. We are all different. Some of our population are very young people who have not yet separated their values from their parents'. Worldwide the trend is toward greater bigotry and lesser tolerance.....so this is not a one time issue, this is forever, this is for life. We won't win people over to tolerance by being intolerant. I am worried that the school's efforts to reduce hate-oriented actions of all kinds may backfire. I hope not.

If you're going to be a politician these days and believe what Sally Kern believes, you need to have metal detectors and first amendment zones and keep anyone from taping you when you say what you really think. This is a week or more old but it's important so I thought I'd bring it to your attention. This clip from Ellen was what first came to my attention:

In court that is. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] owl_clan for posting this link and keeping me up to date on the progress of the Christian Church in our Great Nation. It is about time that somebody stood up to those so-called Christians, in spite of the "fact" that "ours is a Christian nation".

Of course there will be appeals

I put a blooming orchid in the bathroom last night as a gesture of goodwill and to beautify the common space. I moved the bundle of cheap plastic flowers. This morning at 6am Leslie woke me up with her bitching through the walls at my having put live flowers in the bathroom. She said "Too bad, you don't like that, too bad." She woke me in a bad way with her bitter ranting, and made it clear that she didn't like the orchid. She shoved the orchid to the side to put her plastic flowers back. Later I took the orchid back to my room. Cheap plastic flowers for the bathroom it is.

I look forward to living far far far from her nasty energy. Such vicious sarcasm and oozing hatred is poisonous to everyone. My cat can't stand her. I keep trying to keep my heart open, to give her lovingkindness. But it is really challenging. I positively despise her at this moment. She will rot in her own hell no matter what I do.

A hypothetical question:

If I insult your God, and you get pissed at me and shoot me dead, and my family gets mad at you and kills you, and your family gets mad at my family and bombs their house, etc etc etc, who started the war?
