See a few pix from back when I went kayaking in France. The page hasn't been updated since 2007, but I'm glad it's still up. A little bit of history. I actually took this shot from the home page, with Mykl hanging on to a rock, and Janine standing by a ducky on the edge of the Verdon.

This reading, from A General Theory of Love is helping me to understand myself. To summarize, mammals are the only creatures with a limbic brain, and it is where we form attachments--to our young, so that we will rear them, to our lovers, and to our other assorted dear ones notably including other mammals. Reptiles and amphibians don't attach the same way, they lay eggs and leave them behind. Birds care for their young but the attachment seems to be completely instinctive and not personal in the least. But mammals, we attach to individuals.

I would like to think that there is time for me in this life for one adult love, one conscious love, one blessed with great joy, and more truth than words. I've heard tales of such loves. My loves have been young ones. I am ready for the love of my life.

A single engine is idling on the track less than two blocks from my window. The wisteria is blooming purple and sweet outside the window, and the grape vines are just starting to leaf. It's 62.2 degrees F and dry. I went for my standard walk wearing my long gray coat, because it somehow feels really good to sweep along in it even though I don't need the warmth. I am slow to admit that spring has sprung here, because so often I will end up chilled by a dark drizzling fog sometime when I left home without enough layers.

Made it through Husum Falls today. Love my old boat; a Prijon Embudo. I hadn't paddled it in at least 5 years, but I was surely enjoying paddling a boat that actually moves forward and tracks. No more will I run rivers in a playboat just because everybody else is.

Chased back home again by the rain. I went out with precisely the wrong timing, because the sun is shining again now. Vaccine workshop today was interesting. I took a lot more notes than I'm sharing with you. One of the possible homework assignments is to "write a blog entry (3 paragraphs) about something about vaccines that you want to share with the public". Tough one, huh. I think I can do that. I already have that entry fomenting. It will be a message to mamas, because they are the ones at the mercy of the system if no one helps them get clear about what matters most for their babies.

Pouring rain out there. I got up at 5:30 am because the cat woke me up, and I knew I had only one more hour until my alarm lit up....and would not sleep anyway. I have a quiz at 7:30am every Monday. Today it is on the Clinical Physical Diagnosis of heart pain, palpitations, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and more broadly atherosclerosis. Interesting stuff.

At long last we can turn the page on another year. Funny how we mark time, and make certain days into big turning points. Every day is a new beginning. Every moment is an opportunity to begin to do what you really love, to begin the work of being your truest you, to begin the process of peeling away the layers of conditioning and denial that separate us from who we really are. The new year starts today, and every day. But today is the day for resolutions, so I am going to check on my old ones, and write out some new ones. Most days I look only at what I need to do to get through the next day or maybe week. It is rare that I look years into the future and focus on longterm goals. I think this is the value of these marks in time; that they remind us of how much time is passing. Another year has gone by. I hope to have another year to follow, and another, and another. I hope you also have many years, and that they are all good. Thanks for sharing your voyage with me.

I am supposed to be asleep but I haven't been sleeping well the last several nights. My TMJ is acting up such that I can't even put the backs of my teeth together, and I have to be in class at 7:30am tomorrow morning. There is something about the time pressure that makes it even harder to get to bed on time. It doesn't help that tonight I had a class until 8pm, and on Mondays and Wednesdays I'm committed until 9pm. It takes me a few hours to decompress after classes. I can't just go to sleep. I end up getting up at 11 or 12 and puttering around until I start to sag again.

Today, and last Sunday, Rick and I grilled in the back yard. There's this new cat that comes through the fence, or around the fence after I blocked the hole, and meows and begs and rubs incessantly. It is skinny but not emaciated, and has a collar on. I let it have some leftover buffalo juice last week, and now I know that was a mistake. Today I had enough of it, but it was not so easy to drive away. I progressed from hissing and gesturing at it to throwing sticks and pebbles. It just kept coming back.

Well today is the 3rd hot day in a row in lovely PDX. The crow's nest gets boiling hot these days.....it's 2pm and as soon as that sun comes in here I have to shut the door and retreat to the back of the house. I have been offline for 2 days because my router appears to have died. So I'm headed out to best buy to get a new one. The comcast guy says they have gone down in price. Now that I know what's up with my internet, I wish I was gone kayaking, but I just had to deal with that and the pile of bills on my desk before I could begin to play anymore.
