back in PDX

Made it. Actually I woke up at an overlook at 4am, about 250 miles from town, and drove in with the first wave of trucks. I was at the DEQ 5 minutes before opening to get my truck emissions checked. From there went straight to the DMV and got it registered. Call insurance to make sure it is extended. I have wheels until 9/2011. Thanks to Bill. So many mechanics flat out refused to even look at this truck, and Bill fixed it in a half day with $70 in parts. So I can go to the mountains when I want, now, instead of waiting and begging for rides.

There's an older husky living here who is on 3 meds. She's on metacam/meloxicam which is an NSAID, for her arthritis. She's on levothyroxine (synthetic T4). And she's on DES (diethyl stilbestrol), yes, the same one that they used to give pregnant women that ended up causing all sorts of malformations in their offspring. DES is used in canines to prevent urinary incontinence. Who knew??

I'm interested in your ideas about where I might consider setting up a naturopathic medical practice in the west. Have any suggestions as to places or people I should investigate in the northern half of the western US? When I leave Flag I am going to explore that region on my way back to PDX, and I have never been there before, so I do not know where I am going. Montana for sure, and Sandpoint, Idaho.
Arrived in AZ yesterday morning: brain dump )

Traveling in the style of my past life---living in the back of a beater '86 toyota pickup. No boats on top this time, just a bike to be delivered to Flag. Lots of food, water, oil and coolant on board. Headed via Idaho to SLC, Utah where I'll visit at least one friend. Then Flag. "New" toyota truck ('83) is in good working order but still needs paint. Probably will be sanding that while I'm there. Goal is to visit friend in Texas panhandle before she leaves that location in mid July, on my way to family in the southeast. Here we go!!! Posts may be sporadic or nonexistent. Hope ya'll are having a great summer!

I just got an offer for $400 for my truck. I declined. I'm planning on driving it somewhere. Am I a fool?

I have an old toyota truck--a 1986, 2 wheel drive, with a 22R motor with 190,000 miles on it. The timing chain and clutch are original. The truck has seen better days, it has rust, several oil leaks, and it is blowing some smoke. Not enough smoke to stop it from passing Oregon inspection: it is registered and road legal. But it needs some love.

I feel like I'm unravelling.....the stress of not liking my homespace combined with the new program, truck problems, general school stress.....have added up to me feeling like things are on the edge of coming apart entirely. I can't find my tea, keep loosing my watch and wallet and keys and ID and cell phone.....I don't seem to be able to bring the right stuff with me to school......I don't like feeling this way. It's as if there is pressure from all sides.

The orientation was rather long. It started midday on Wednesday and went all day on Thursday and Friday. Lots of talking heads. I took some scattered notes, and wished that instead they had just given me a faculty and staff directory and a map of the building---on PAPER. But this school is flavored differently than any school I've ever attended. They even admit to being on "NCNM time" which is about 15-20 minutes behind schedule. Frankly, I don't like that. I want classes to start on time.

This morning I rode to school and back again to learn the route. It took me 47 minutes to ride to school, and longer to ride home because I got lost and had to backtrack. I was riding pretty hard and not carrying anything but a small fanny pack. No way am I going to do that ride every day in the rain and dark carrying books. Looks like I'll be riding the bus until I find another place to live. Since school is just about to start, moving will have to wait until something works out naturally. I'm not going to push it right now. Let go, let the flow take me to the next place when the time is ripe.

Went for a walk this morning and laughed out loud when I saw the "gamer" sticker on someone's car. I don't even know what it means to frag somebody, but it doesn't matter. Down by the river I bumped into Don again, and Barbara & Larry. I'm getting to know the neighbors by using the community park. They are just like people anywhere. Don is 63, divorced, and mad at me for being too young. I told him I'm a lesbian. But he's still going to take me for a ride on his boat this afternoon. I'm sure he's hoping I'll show up in the eentsiest bikini but he's SOL. We sat on a point over the river and talked for a long time. He's full of info about Oregon and how things work around here. I now know that I shouldn't update my car registration until it expires, and I should get my engine rebuild and emissions check done just before that.

I'm going to pick up my Uhaul in a few minutes. My pickup's motor has begun to smoke and nobody thinks it will make it over all those mountains between here and Oregon--with a load. So the pickup is getting a ride to Oregon. Which I'm not sure is a good idea because I'm not sure I'm going to pay for the rebuild. But we shall see. Since I've got a Uhaul I'm going to take everything with me, and leave nothing in storage. My friends will be my only reason to return to Flagstaff.

Cat's going with me. I have a place lined up in West Linn, right next to a state park that borders the river. So far (and I know that phone and email are not decisive on this) I really like the homeowner (Brian), and I also like the fact that of the four people who will be living there, I am the youngest. Brian's goal was to create a no-drama household. YES.

Twas a beautiful evening to ride my bike home with a belly full of sushi. Pink clouds and stars at the same time, the mountain looming dark in the distance. My friend S brought her brother and we had a charming conversation over a huge order of raw fish. Yum. How much mercury does mackerel have in it?
