You can check out the progress of America's increasing BMI by state, since 1985, on this govt page. The South leads the charge.

Colorado is the Rocky Mountain holdout but they are sliding too.

New research shows that there is no link between thimerosal-containing vaccines administered during pregnancy or infancy and the development of autism. The doc interview says there is no need for further research on this question.

CDC on vaccine safety: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/index.html

"Clinicians can feel confident in counseling parents that the scientific evidence does not support a link between thimerosal in vaccines and autism," Dr. DeStefano said. "Currently, this should not be much of an issue because thimerosal is no longer included in most routinely used in infant and childhood vaccines in the United States."

According to Dr. DeStefano, the single exception is in some influenza vaccines, but "thimerosal-free preparations of influenza vaccines are available for parents who are more comfortable with thimerosal-free products.

I'd like to watch this presentation by David Eagleman on how to prepare but it's an hour and a half long (no time right now). It starts with a consideration of why societies collapse. This org is dedicated to helping us learn to think in a longterm way. I found a short writeup of Eagleman's points on their site here.

I've been using medscape to keep abreast of medical news...for a while now. They're good. Anyway, here's the swine flu alert center. I ran across an article that mentioned Medscape as possibly a good stock investment, too.

--state and public health agencies authorized to widen the use of precise diagnostic test
--they want to find out for sure where this flu is and how fast it is spreading!

I just ran across a link to Suzie Q's blog where she posts several links with regard to a large stash of plastic coffins somewhere in Georgia (in the US, not Europe!). There is a link to the manufacturer of the plastic things (polyguardvaults) which seems to confirm that they are coffins, or perhaps coffin liners. The web is full of conjecture about what FEMA might be stockpiling coffins for.... I am curious to know if you have any thoughts on the matter.

Jesse Helms is probably turning in his grave. Helms opposed funding for AIDS programs, foreign and domestic. The U.S. travel and immigration ban for people with HIV/AIDS was his creation. He got it passed as an amendment on another bill. Because of the "Helms Amendment", the US has banned HIV+ people from visiting even for a day for two decades. On this planet only 13 nations ban HIV positive visitors and immigrants. A few of those nations include Iraq, China, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.

Lyme Disease Cases Double in U.S.: CDC
According to statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of cases of Lyme disease has doubled in the U.S. since 1991. (that's 16 years) More than 21,000 cases are now reported every year, making it the most common illness transmitted by insects or animals in the country. The CDC says these figures are most likely an underestimation as not all cases are reported.

Fish Oil Shows Promise in Brain Disorders
Fish oil is increasingly showing promise as a complementary medicine. There is evidence that fish oil supplements rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help treat bipolar and attention deficit disorders in children. A small study found a 30% reduction in manic symptoms with no side effects among children diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
