Boozin' is Worse for Women

I've noticed for years now that I can't hold my liquor like I usedtacould....and also that hangovers from small amounts last for days. Since my last boyfriend I've consumed very little alcohol, and recently I have decided that the right amount for me personally is none. This is a little sad, because among my very favorite things on this planet are the incredible combinations of wine and cheese, and wine and chocolate. I also utterly adore sake with my sushi. But historically I have always consumed the most alcohol while in the company of men who drink routinely. So I must draw the line: I don't drink. That's it for this lifetime. I have learned the art of appearing to take a swig from a jug, while actually only barely touching my tongue to the contents. Someone just gave me a bottle of tequila, and I'm saving it for my next party, at which time I will get everyone else blasted. Yeah!
Here's Mercola with links on why boozin' hurts women faster. It has to do with us females lacking an enzyme that disarms the toxin.

wine and cheese
I didn't drink for 15 years.
I do like wine and cheese and I discovered there existes "de-alcoholized" wines....had alcohol but it has been removed. Ariel is one brand that has de-alcoholized or non-alcoholic wines that are nice. Other brands exist.
Unfortuneately it is a rare bar or restaurant that actually carry these. (usually they only have some form of champagne for special occaisions if they do)
You can find a larger assortment of these wines at wine stores who pride themselves on variety. I recommend you call ahead.
If you find anything that you really like, feel free to share it with me. Even though I have a drink upon occaision now, I still enjoy (and generally prefer) the de-alcoholized versions.
btw...I suspect one can find enzyme supplements to handle the deficit.
Thank you for your information....loving it.

Date: 2007-05-10 10:27 pm (UTC)I have other health issues that are affecting my choice not to drink, specifically my liver is compromised.....bummer. But I'm doing what I can to protect and re-grow it.
Re: wine and cheese
I experience words as creative so I would upgrade to "restored to full health" or "my liver is healthy" wording that moves forward in now. (try them all on and experience what they feel like to you)
You have the main requirement for accomplishing your goal here-
You believe it is possible.
Also, it sounds/looks like you are willing to take actions to support your choice of abundant health. : )
I have a family member who prefers the medical model...but she is coming around and maybe it will be soon that she starts drinking or taking yellow dock to support her liver health. Ideally she finds herself a dr who has studied both the medical and alternative/nutritional modalities. (my fantasy too-that sort of medical professional.)
You are already well on your path with every "I can" as your mind/belief/emotion are the most powerful tools you have.
Meanwhile, if you are a "yes" I will also place you in my prayers seeing you already healed.
Yay!!!

Some of us do it intentionally and others just live it.

more on wine-selfish
Date: 2007-05-11 06:27 pm (UTC)I have asked for them at restaurants even knowing they are not on the wine list because as you said...most folks do not know they exist. So I like to make sure they know they exist. So thank you for reminding me to start doing that again.

Date: 2007-05-11 01:05 pm (UTC)I tried some non-alcoholic wine once and thought it was disgusting. Then again, my taste buds are weird.
disgusting
There are some other really choice ones out there that make the Ariel taste like amateur hour but it has been awhile. It is best to just experiment and discover which ones work for you.
I like St Julian's sparkling WHITE grape juice for non-alcoholic...never had alcohol in it. It is cheapest at Meijer's. $3.50 at the holidays.
De-alcoholized is different and more like real wine...since it IS real wine...just had the alcohol removed. It might have trace amounts of alcohol in it (just as non-alcoholic beer does....Molsons is my fav in that catagory) so read the label.
I tend to drink soda water with cranberry juice in the bar...swizzle stick or twist of lemon or lime if you wish to look like you have a "real" drink.
