MERS and Camels
Jun. 6th, 2014 03:33 pmArabian peninsula = Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Leb¬anon, Oman, Palestinian territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Yemen
MERS is the viral infection that's causing severe respiratory disease in lots of folks over there. There have been just a few cases in the US, starting in May. I'm wondering if military personel are coming back sick? Apparently pretty much all of the camels on the Arabian peninsula have this virus. We don't know if it causes chronic infections, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did, considering what we are learning about viral DNA mingled with our own.

Writer's Block: The name game

My username is simply something descriptive that I came up with after my first several username choices were not available. I didn't even google it first, to know that it was SO already done. But I don't care. I am still reporting here live on earth, so it works. I have no other name I'd adopt now, liveonearth has a life of its own.

Midnight Rain
Sep. 4th, 2007 07:45 amYesterday I did a few more home-making errands, such as buying a kettle that whistles so I won't burn any more pots on the stove. I bought a gallon each of vinegar and bleach, and cleaned my bathroom for the 3rd time. I washed the walls first with vinegar, then with bleach, and the green colored water revealed that I was actually removing the paint from the walls. I left a fan blowing out the window to remove the fumes. I cleaned under and behind everything, scrubbed the trim, pulled all the hair and bandaids out of the heating vents, washed all the towels and rugs, cleaned the litter box and took out the trash. After it was all done I had a hopeful moment that the smell would be gone, but it's still there. I can burn incense in there every day until I die and that smell will still be in there. I may try some commercial products that cover or "eat" odors.
So I remain open to other living arrangements.

new syndicated column by Amy Goodman
Nov. 9th, 2006 08:46 pmIf you haven't heard of her, she's the brains and spirit behind Democracy Now, a spunky radio news program that has spread via Pacifica Radio and NPR in some places (not here).
You can download her daily program here: http://www.democracynow.org/index.pl.
Here's her first weekly column: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/291047_amy05.html.
Amy Goodman's book, Exception to the Rulers, starts with 9/11 and follows the story of the Shrub regime and their poorly-executed attempt to dominate the mideast, along with the submission of the mainstream media. But Goodman does not lower her eyes. There has already been a lot of great reporting from this lady and her crew. I look forward to seeing her column in papers. Our local paper, the Daily Sun, would just as soon ignore her. But if enough of us request her column...who knows what could happen.
Goodman's column will be titled "Breaking the Sound Barrier" and to request it our paper is to contact King Features.
