Your confusion is not pathology, it is path. It has something to show you that clarity could never reveal. The nature of chaos is wisdom, but you must provide a home for it to receive its mysteries.

Your feeling of disconnection is not neurotic, it is intelligent. It has something to show you that oneness could never reveal. If you will practice the yoga of non-abandonment and provide safe passage – it will disclose an unmet doorway.

Your loneliness, your shakiness, and your fear are not mistakes. They are not obstacles on your path. They *are* the path. The freedom you are longing for will never be found in the eradication of the unwanted, but only in the core of the love and information it carries.

It’s fantastic to look at people and see that they really, deep down, are enlightened. They’re It. They’re faces of the divine.

And they look at you, and they say ‘oh no, but I’m not divine. I’m just ordinary little me.’ You look at them in a funny way, and here you see the buddha nature looking out of their eyes, straight at you, and saying it’s not, and saying it quite sincerely.

And that’s why, when you get up against a great guru, the Zen master, or whatever, he has a funny look in his eyes. When you say ‘I have a problem, guru. I’m really mixed up, I don’t understand,’ he looks at you in this queer way, and you think ‘oh dear me, he’s reading my most secret thoughts. He’s seeing all the awful things I am, all my cowardice, all my shortcomings.’

But that’s not what he’s looking at. He’s giving you a funny look for quite another reason altogether. He’s giving you a funny look because he sees in you the Brahman, the Godhead, just claiming it’s ‘poor little me’.

Rowing 2: Graduating to Advanced Beginner

The previous post about big water rowing strategy for small water boaters has been helpful to a lot of non-boatmen tasked with rowing. Friends have asked me to write more about rowing skills, so here we go. It took me years to get comfortable with the basics because I was only occasionally on the oars. When I finally got control of my boat angle in turbulent water I started having better lines. Moving the boat forward and going for the meat got easier, but any finer points were lost on me. I've ridden with boatmen who row every day for months and years on end, and they knew things that you have to learn by doing. I've never rowed for a living, so I'm an amateur. Still, I've had some seasons when I rowed enough that light bulbs went off in my head. Here are three lessons that made a big difference for me.

According to this recent article in Scientific American, the three types are 1) the Dunning-Kruger type, in which the protagonist vastly overestimates his skill or knowledge, 2) impulsive mistakes, and 3) mistakes of inattention. I've never made any of those, have you?

Unsuspecting German Homeopaths Hallucinate on 2C-E

A group of 30 homeopaths at a conference in Germany became ill from an apparent overdose of a psychotropic medication. The article implies that the trippers had no intention of tripping, but I have my doubts. Perhaps the food was spiked, or they were told it was "harmless". Or perhaps they thought themselves ready for an incautious dose of a mind-expanding drug, and got more than they bargained for.

A homeopathy conference descended into drug-induced madness after thirty healers were spiked with a powerful hallucinogen.

Ambulances raced to the conference in Handeloh, south of Hamburg after 29 healers were found suffering from delusions having taken 2C-E.

The synthetic drug is a powerful hallucinogen, with effects similar to LSD, experts say.

German broadcaster NDR said that victims were, ‘staggering around, rolling in a meadow, talking gibberish and suffering severe cramps.’

Science is Not Sick

Science is not sick. It never has been. Science is how we can reveal the secrets of the universe. It is a slow, iterative, arduous process. It makes mistakes but it is self-correcting. That doesn’t mean that the mistakes don’t sometimes stick around for centuries. Sometimes it takes new technologies, discoveries, or theories (all of which are of course themselves part of science) to make progress. Fundamental laws of nature will perhaps keep us from ever discovering certain things, say, what happens when you approach the speed of light, leaving them for theoretical consideration only. But however severe the errors, provided our species doesn’t become extinct through cataclysmic cosmic events or self-inflicted destruction, science has the potential to correct them.

So it is with emotional knowledge. In the first years of life, as (a child's) brain passes from the generous scaffold to the narrow template, a child extracts patterns from his relationships. Before any glimmerings of event memory appear, he stores an impression of what love FEELS like. Neural memory compresses theses qualities into a few powerful Attractors--any single instance a featherweight, but accumulated experience leaves a dense imprint. That concentrated knowledge whispers to a child from beneath the veil of consciousness, telling him what relationships ARE, how they function, what to anticipate, how to conduct them. If a parent loves him in the healthiest way, wherein his needs are paramount, mistakes are forgiven, patience is plentiful, and hurts are soothed as best they can be, then THAT is how he will relate to himself and others. Anomalous love--one where his needs don't matter, or where love is suffocating or autonomy intolerable--makes its ineradicable limbic stamp. Healthy loving then becomes incomprehensible.

Zeroing in on HOW to love goes hand in hand with WHOM. A baby strives to tune in to his parents, but he cannot judge their goodness. He attaches to whoever is there, with the unconditional fixity we profess to require of later attachments: for better or worse;, for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health. Attachment is not a critic: a child adores his mother's face, and he runs to her whether she is pretty or plain. And he prefers the emotional patterns of the family he knows, regardless of its objective merits. As an adult his heart will lean toward these outlines. The closer a potential mate matches his prototypes, the more enticed and entranced he will be--the more he will feel that here, at last, with this person, he BELONGS.

My Bailout is Next--or Student Loan Debtor's Prison

This is a petition asking for student loan debt to be forgiven so that we can go about the business of opening new businesses, instead of getting low paying stupid jobs just to be able to make monthly payments on our student loans. I've been saying for a while now that the student loan debt is the next bubble. Last year student loan debt surpassed credit card debt in the US. It's evident to me that I will probably not live long enough to repay my entire debt--I'm just not that young, and the economy is not looking great. I'm not saying I deserve a bailout: I own my foolishness taking on this debt. I'm willing to work hard for the rest of my productive life, and I'd like to give back. I always wanted to be a doctor. I've never had a debt before, and it was and is an uncomfortable decision. If there were prisons for debtors in the US then I wouldn't be too surprised to end up there. But we don't imprison debtors, we just harass them. It is that harassment and the suffering involved in mindless work that I would like to avoid, in favor of being able to concentrate on the business I would like to open, and the people that I would like to help. If the fed were to excuse my debt, I would be able to do more for public health than I otherwise could do.
