An excellent example of a man who LOOKS like he has very high testosterone is the Duke Lacrosse player Ryan McFadyen. Check out his mug. (PHOTO disappeared from web)

This young man threatened to kill and skin two strippers, in a nasty email on his Duke student account. He signed it with his team number, 41. Does his apparently dangerously high testosterone excuse such behavior? How about his value as a sports player? Aggressive violence and rape are common among sports teams and especially the alpha members of those teams. High testosterone is what makes him athletic and good at lacrosse. High T blurs his ability to think clearly, so it is akin to insanity. Should he be excused for possibly participating in the gang rape of one of these strippers? Should we monitor young men who show signs of high testerone as possible threats to society? Should we treat them as if it were a disease? I think that if high testosterone causes this kind of behavior (and I believe it does), it IS a threat to society and should be medically treated.

See my March 20 entry on Testosterone for more info.

Does this guy have any similarities in his face?? (BELOW)

And here's one more athlete who has rather public issues with testosterone: Floyd Landis, who lost the 2006 Tour de France title based on allegations that he was doping with synthetic testosterone.

high T questions

It's good to hear a man pipe up with some corroboration and relfection here. Thanks! I agree, blanket monitoring--or even testing---of the general populace is not likely to fly. It's just something I would love to do personally--maybe for my doctorate, who knows?

I ask the "is he excusable" question because universities have been sweeping rape cases under the rug for a long time. It seems to be expected for these guys to have a hard time with sexual boundaries, and to laugh it off as an inevitable cost of having a sports team. My alma mater (Univ of TN, Knoxville) has had great football teams with a lot of secrets. Many star players on the most lucrative sports teams are dangerous men. Strong and agressive high-T players draw in $$$, and so they get protection from the law by people with more greed than ethics.

To T test guys who have committed violent & sexual crimes seems like a pretty obvious way of finding out what's going on. Hormones have a whole lot to do with who we are. And there's room for plenty more research in this area. I would love to see all violent felons, male and female, undergo extensive health screening. I believe that much vicious, agressive and antisocial behavior occurs when a person is chemically out of his/her head, and not necessarily because they've ingested a drug.

It is my observation that very high testosterone levels are as plain to see in the face of the subject as fetal alchohol syndrome and down syndrome. And I feel sorry for those big-chinned guys. And steer clear of them. They are the ones for whom my short skirt is come-on enough to cause trouble.

I've got to go get a mug shot of OJ Simpson.

OK, so I did look at your pics and you don't appear to be in the super-high T zone like the pics I posted, but you're obviously no slouch in the T department.

Appearance checklist:
Long chin: semi.
Prominent brow: check.
Prominent cheekbones: semi.
Tiny frontal cranium: no.
Extreme "wolfish" look of the face: no.
Muscular build: check.
Broad shoulders: check.

Have you ever had yours tested?

On me: I'm built more like a man than a woman in the shoulder/hip ratio, wear men's pants, have muscular arms, etc. I theorize that this is because of T, and this provoked my original interest in the subject.

Have you heard Ira Glass' program on T? This American Life, plays on NPR. The T program was 2002. Ira interviews a regular guy who temporarily lacks T for medical reasons, and examines what is different. He also interviews a dyke who gets a sex change to become a man, and starts taking T. The change in perception is fascinating.

We are the way we are because of hormones and neurotransmitters. If we change either of those things, we become very different people.

In the middle ages, a legal punishment for certain crimes was castration. You sure would change a guy by doing that. How to "fix" violent females is not so obvious.

So you mentioned that you have worked in various "high T" professions. I see "police" on your shirt. What else?

a question about T and homosexuality

What do you think of my theory that gay men are predominantly high T? This theory in spite of the "girlie-man" social image....

T, homosexuality, bisexuality, brainwashing

How utterly refreshing. I don't find your honesty brutal, I find it informative and nonjudgmental. It is a rare straight man in our culture who can talk about desire and homosexuality without hiding behind macho defenses.

Your theory about lust and gayness matches my own personally derived theory. Testosterone is the hormone of desire. High T people are hornier than low T people, gender irrelevant. Anyone who is extremely horny may not have patience with a low T person's need to be seduced emotionally and gradually aroused. They just want to FUCK. When one is possessed with such an urge, who or what you fuck doesn't matter so much as simply getting it DONE.

I don't believe all the rape awareness advocates who say that rape is NOT sexual, it is purely violent. I believe it is both violent AND sexual. But better that super-horny men should fuck each other than to go around sticking it where it's not welcome.

Of course I derived this theory from my own experience with men, and the gayest men of my own lovers have been the horniest.

The idea that hetero men who doen't get off as much as they need to put that extra sexual energy into machoness is a new idea on me. I'll have to bat that one around, but it seems to jive.

About your reputed straightness yet occasional attraction to men and willingness to kiss one: I think (here's another theory) that EVERYBODY IS BISEXUAL. Anyone can be sexually aroused by someone else regardless of gender. Monkeys do it. The only reason that some people can't even imagine touching someone of the same gender is that they have been brainwashed. Our culture is homophobic and people get taught that they SHOULD NOT go there else go to hell, or whatever punishment. At least two of my lovers in this life were men I would call gay, but who were afraid to try sex with men because of the social ramifications, and their own homophobia. They liked me because I'm big and muscular and agressive. Hmmmmm.

FYI: I heard somewhere that a woman actually absorbs T from the semen of her lover, which increases her libido. Don't know if it's true, but it jives.

So it's a personal topic. I have a "slutty history" too, and plenty of grounds for my opinions. It's really nice to hear from a man who is not a homophobe or moralist. Thanks again for having your say!!

on causes of violence

This from a male friend who's in the know:

The act of doing bad things to people has a lot of causes. We know that the base rate for violence is about 2% per year in the general population. It is about 35% per year in meth users, about 20% in problem drinkers, 11% with ADHD, and so on down the line to us regular folks who, with a 2/100 chance of deliberately doing harm to another with the intention of causing pain in the next year. The gender ratio is actually pretty close to 50/50 — there is a lot of quiet violence going on in homes. Personally, I have never shown violence, and this may be a T thing, but I think too that I rehearsed the flower child role pretty thoroughly between 17 and 19, a time when a 1000 new neural connections per second are being generated during the last throes of brain development and solidification. Viola’! Personality asserts itself, pretty much forever. Far out, man.

I forgot to mention the hair line

Male pattern baldness is related to testosterone. Guys go bald where T binds to the wrong receptor and interferes with hair production. Bald guys ... might be more high T suspects.
