Plea to Senator McCain

You used to be a man of morals. You had heart, soul, and intelligence! But something happened. Did politics get to you? Too much money, too much power...you were not strong enough to stick to your true values. You are MY Senator, and I no longer respect you. But I think that somewhere in you there is still a spark of integrity, and it is to that spark that I speak.

Today you said "Dr. Falwell was a man of distinguished accomplishment who devoted his life to serving his faith and country." Of course, you were on your way to the Republican convention, and the Grand Old Party has fallen into slavery to the Religious Right. You were just trying to fit in. But why bother to fit in with a crowd of corrupt liars, misogynists, homophobes and other kinds of nimwads? What good will it do you? None. You can die rich and corrupt, or embattled but with a full heart. Where is the warrior McCain?

It wasn't that long ago, only in the year 2000, that you referred to Falwell and Robertson as "agents of intolerance." You knew. You still know. It must be eating you up, to fall in with criminals. Now you can only lose. Even if you win, you lose.

I still harbor the hope that you might break free from the morass that has taken the Republican party, renounce your lies, and come forward purified and honest. Perhaps you would lose, that is what everyone would say. But there are so many of us who crave a true, bold and honest leader! One real leader could harness the energy of all these furious people and turn this nation on its head. We would all help. But we need a leader. Where did you go?

I don't think it is too late. I'm sure I'm in a small minority. And people would call you a flipflopper. Your penance would be hard. But it would be worth it. For you to be elected president in 2008 you would have to make a complete break from Bush and the entire nonsensical corporate militaristic regime. They would try to kill you. No plane flight would be safe. No food would be safe. But you used to be a military man, and you know what they might try. You might survive. There is an army of us regular civilians who would conspire to help a real leader survive to beat the established powers. All you have to do is inspire us.

People that will say that I'm nuts, making this plea to a part of you that hasn't been publicly revealed in years. But I see it in your eyes. It must hurt to become one of what you despise. I beg you to stop it. Stop now, come clean, speak the truth. Try to find a real solution. See what happens.

In a previous version of this post I disparaged Falwell's integrity. Then having read and heard a lot about him in the last couple days, I have come to the conclusion that his integrity was intact. Falwell really believed that homosexuality and abortion (etc) were WRONG and he stuck to those values for his whole life. He spoke out and in his words he tried to be "forthright and candid". I find his values to be a great distance from those of Jesus, and I find him to have been rather sex-obsessed, but this doesn't make him all that unique. What was unique about Falwell was that he spoke his heart, frankly and publicly, no matter what people said about him. And in that, I can find something to admire. That is, in fact, what I want McCain to do. Be more like Falwell.
