Sunday the 16th, so they say, is the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party in 1773, back when Americans remembered how to protest. The problem is, protests of that magnitude have the capacity to spark a revolution, and we don't think we're ready for that. Are we?

I'm reading a book about the history of naturopathy, and Benedict Lust (1872-1945) is the "father of naturopathy". It turns out he was also a libertarian. He was feisty in court, and especially energetic when hurling epithets at the orthodox "medical trust."

Part of my method for keeping my boat afloat in this world is keeping a calendar, and I am currently going through September to make sure nothing fell through the cracks. Sometimes, when lacking other paper, I take notes in my calendar. On September 6 I took some notes during Orientation at NCNM on Zwickey's talk. Here's what I thought worth noting.

I've been learning history from listening to the tributes to President Ford after his death. I was a child when he served. Now I understand more about him and I am grateful that he was a president of this nation. It is widely believed that he was not re-elected because he pardoned Nixon. Lots of people have something to say about that decision. It isn't possible to know the true content of his thoughts when he made that decision, but I find myself among those who think that perhaps it was not the right choice.

There's something very reassuring about reading Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival. My sense of dread over US behavior in the world has escalated over the last few years, and my frustration with people's ignorance has been paired with a feeling that perhaps I am nuts... Perhaps my perception of what is happening is all wrong. But Chomsky tells me that I am not crazy. Chomsky tells me that indeed, fascism IS good for business, and the events of today are founded firmly in long traditions and developing philosophies. His writing is dense and it flows from subject to subject. It requires some intelligence to follow him, and he is sometimes ironic or even sarcastic. But I feel better just knowing that this one foreign affairs buff and brilliant linguist sees the same things happening in the world that I do. I am not alone.

Here's another from Thoreau, this from Civil Disobedience, 1849, which I was required to read in High School:

"Unjust laws exist: shall we be content to obey them, or shall we endeavor to amend them, and obey them until we have succeeded, or shall we transgress them at once? Men generally, under such a government as this, think that they ought to wait until they have persuaded the majority to alter them. They think that, if they should resist, the remedy would be worse than the evil. But it is the fault of the government itself that the remedy is worse than the evil. It makes it worse. Why is it not more apt to anticipate and provide for reform? Why does it not cherish its wise minority? Why does it cry and resist before it is hurt? Why does it not encourage its citizens to be on the alert, to point out its faults, and do better than it would have them? Why does it always crucify Christ, and excommunicate Copernicus and Luther, and pronounce Washington and Franklin rebels?"

For those of you who understand that human suffering creates human monsters who are indifferent to suffering, this man is a prime example. He has been on trial for four years at the Hague. He stood accused of more than 60 war crimes and crimes against humanity. He is known as "the Butcher of the Balkans" and is responsible for four wars. By acting as his own lawyer he used this trial as an opportunity to speak on his political beliefs. He delayed the procedings at every opportunity, refused to enter a plea, and constantly denounced the court. In spite of his lack of cooperation, the trial proved that he was responsible for the genocide committed during the 1992-1995 Bosnia war, which the US government largely ignored while more than 200,000 people were killed. The trial was not completed when he was found dead in his cell this morning. There was no sign of suicide, and cause of death is not known. He did have dangerously high blood pressure and a heart condition based on the BP, and could have keeled over any minute from that. His lawyers say he was poisoned and want to take the body to Russia for an autopsy.
