New ND in Basalt, CO

Her name is Jody Powell, and she is brilliant, intuitive, and honest. She's also a serious athlete (rock climber especially). Basalt is a very small town and she says getting started is slow going. I have no doubts that she will attract visitors to their small town.

Why my posts aren't so medical anymore

I've started creating a naturopathic "black book" in which I'm compiling diagnostic and treatment information for the conditions which come up in the course of my clinical education. This project eats all of my free time. Medicine is, for me at least, an infinite subject. I'm near the end of this education. I feel the need to make some decisions about how I will practice. What will MY protocols be? What will my treatment hierarchy be? When and to whom will I refer? I'm also considering how I will practice when in a state where I can legally practice medicine and prescribe pharmaceutical medications, as versus when I am in an "unlicensed state" and must not diagnose or prescribe. I'm sorting among the opinions of a great many doctors, doing the research to decide what I will do, and keeping those notes off this record. It just wouldn't be right to give away naturopathic trade secrets online. Though the astute reader can deduce a great deal about the field from the four years of assorted notes I have posted here.

Naturopaths Can Now Serve Tribes

January 24, 2012
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Includes Naturopathic Doctors
in Indian Health Service Loan Repayment Program
HHS Recognizes Licensed Naturopathic Doctors as Eligible Providers

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a federal register notice on January 23, 2012, defining eligibility for participation in the Indian Health Service (IHS) loan repayment program. HHS has the authority to determine the specific health professions for which loan repayment contracts will be awarded, based on the expressed needs of the IHS, American Indians and Alaskan Natives. For the first time, HHS has included licensed naturopathic doctors on the list of "priority health professions." Graduates of accredited naturopathic medical schools may now pursue this opportunity to provide services to meet the needs of this at-risk population.

"After more than nine years, hundreds of Congressional visits, thousands of letters to Congress and the Agency as well as personal meetings with Agency officials, it's finally happened," said Karen Howard, former American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) Executive Director. "This paves the way for inclusion in all federal loan repayment programs and is a significant step towards equity in education for naturopathic students. I can't tell you how overjoyed I am."

AANP President Dr. Michael J. Cronin praised the hard work of the naturopathic community in achieving this goal. "Congratulations to all the NDs and naturopathic students who worked long and hard by participating in the DC Federal Legislative Initiative (DC FLI), sending letters to and visiting their Congress members and for supporting the AANP."

The the full announcement from the Department of Health and Human Services, entitled "Loan Repayment Program for Repayment of Health Professions' Educational Loans," is available through the Government Printing Office online here.

Naturopathic Medicine, as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor is to "diagnose, treat, and help prevent diseases using a system of practice that is based on the natural healing capacity of individuals. May use physiological, psychological or mechanical methods. May also use natural medicines, prescription or legend drugs, foods, herbs, or other natural remedies." Naturopathic doctors train at four-year, post-graduate naturopathic medical schools that are accredited by an agency of the United States Department of Education. Sixteen states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands regulate naturopathic medicine. Learn more at naturopathic.org.

Turf Wars between Oregon Acupuncturists and Chiropractors

I'm not going to get involved in this fight among alternative practitioners, but the struggle for scope of practice is continuous. Naturopathic medicine is in effect the natural health practitioners left behind when chiropractic gained wide acceptance and licensing. The history is ugly, with practitioners ganging up on and deserting each other, everybody seeking recognition and respect.

I am currently studying under a chiropractor who uses "dry needling". I also have shadowed several acupuncturists (who are also ND's) and from what I have seen, I could probably do some therapeutic needling myself, but I do not intend to do so. I will refer to a local acupuncturist when I believe that a condition will respond to needling, but not because I believe in the whole Chinese medicine system of channels and energy. I will do it because I believe in the science.

The OAAOM has filed a legal challenge in the Court of Appeals against the Oregon Board of Chiropractic Examiners' rule OAR 811-015-0036 that chiropractors can perform "dry needling" with only 24 hours of education. An injunction to stay the rule until the legal challenge is heard (3-6 months) was also filed.

The Court of Appeals Appellate Commissioner issued a Stay Order dated July 29, 2011, which suspends the new rule until the issue is resolved by a full panel of judges after hearing a full presentation of the arguments.

Total legal cost is estimated at $30,000. We (OAAOM) are represented by Landye Bennett Blumstein with Thane Tienson as our lawyer.

the new MRSA: CRKP

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, that is. It is resistant to nearly all antibiotics, and according to the Guardian killed 25,000 people in Europe last year. CRKP has been reported in 36 US states so far and is sure to be present in others. LA County longterm care facilities may have lots of it. Antibiotic resistant micro-organisms are best beaten using the naturopathic principle of strengthening the innate healing ability of the organism: there's no bug that can beat a healthy immune system!

Everybody wants to be a groovy hippy enlightened life coach teacher doctor healer

What's up with that? I mean, as I look around, I am on this path toward naturopathy. Everybody I know or meet is going toward nursing or doctoring or acupuncturing, or working as a massage therapist, or treating addicts, or teaching yoga or meditation or nutrition, or opening up a practice, or getting a new certification, or writing a book about all the important stuff they've learned in life. We're all doing it. Some are ahead of others, but we're all going the same direction, like lemmings. Everybody's got a web page. Everybody's self-promoting, wanting to be the guru, wanting to be paid for what we know. We all are hip and cool. What next?

I wonder when the day will come that there's no money for what we know and can communicate, and the matter becomes what can we DO. Besides teach. Who was it that said those who can't do, teach? And why is it that my life is full of gurus or every stripe?? Or is it that my life is full of entrepreneurs, those who have the smarts to separate a sucker from his money for no more than an idea or an experience? And what in life is worth more than an idea or experience? And are they actually making a living with all this purveying of insight? Am I in a bubble? I must be in a tiny little cultural bubble.

I know I'm going around in circles. Seems to be status quo.

The question is, how does a guru dress? And how sincere does the smile really have to be? Because after a while, all those phoney blissed out guru smiles really get tired. It's hard to maintain the appearance of enlightenment. A lot of work, and the veneer is full of gaps.

QotD: Cocaine beats Healthy Living 19 to 1

Ask your physician how to feel good, and he’ll look you squarely in the eye and say, ‘Eat right and exercise.’ Yet for every dollar spent in fitness centers, Americans spend nineteen dollars on cocaine.

The reason? Two seconds after you snort cocaine you feel like Superman. Two weeks of diet and exercise just makes you hungry and sore.

Naturopathic Physician is a Federally Recognized Occupation

Back in October 2009 the U.S. Department of Labor approved a new definition for naturopathic physicians. So the federal government, through its program O*NET, officially recognizes naturopathic medicine as one of 965 recognized occupations, and defines its key features using a standardized, measurable set of variables. The report details are here.

Misguided: McCain's Attempt to Regulate Supplements

Alert from the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians
**McCain/Dorgan Legislation Threatens Access to Supplements**
Contact Your Senator Today! Go here to send an email.

The fact of the matter: in the US we have good laws to insure safety, quality and consistency in our supplement supply, but the FDA has not funded or enforced those laws. Rather than passing new laws that limit consumer options, we need to enforce the laws we have on the books.
