The UK is at least trying now to get people to pay attention to science, but they've spent many years ignoring it. The real problem is that 'the establishment' has no technical education and thinks that they can just as soon buy what they need in other countries as waste money on technical education. The Finniston report was commissioned by the government in the late 70s to find out why the UK had too few engineers, but they never did anything positive to address the issues identified. The Bloodhound SSC program is an attempt to kick start interest in engineering and science. But when I still lived and worked there we thought that the main problem was poor pay. Why would smart kids choose a tough career when they can get more money doing something easier.
It's about to get difficult to make money doing anything "easy". I hope the UK doesn't trash ALL their science funding, but you're right, it's not looking good for nerdly pursuits right now......
