In a couple weeks I am to deliver a presentation, along with a classmate, on a 3-4 products that are available through the NCNM Medicinary. I am going to take notes on one of them here. In front of me I have a MUCAPLEX bottle, so I'm starting with what's on the label.

Helps thin and loosen mucus, making coughs more productive and clearing respiratory airways.
100 tablets
Warning: do not take for persistent or chronic cough ie: smoker, asthma, chornic bronchitis, emphysema, or where cough is accompanied by excessive mucus (unless directed by doc)
Stop if: cough lasts over one week, is recurring, or is accompanied by fever, rash, persistent headache
Ask if: preg or breast feeding
NOT sure what this number is, but it's printed at 90 degrees to the rest: l172321.E02

DOSAGES
adults and kids over 12: 1-2 tabs every 4 hours, not more than 12 tabs in 24 hours
age 6-12: 1/2-1 tabs same timeframe
under 6: consult doc

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: GUAIFENESIN

guaifenesin = glycerol guaicacolate 200mg in each tablet (label)
Guaifenesin (INN) or guaiphenesin (former BAN) aka glyceryl guaiacolate (wiki)
??what's the difference between glyceryl and glycerol??
glycerol = a sweet syrupy trihydroxy alcohol
obtained by saponification of fats and oils
glyceryl = a trivalent radical derived from glycerol
by removing the three hydroxyl radicals

OTC PO expectorant, usually in pill or syrup form, many brands
from the guaiac tree aka gum tree

generic remedy of Native Americans in 1500's
FDA approved in 1952
mb combined with dextromethorphan (antitussive, most common combo, goal: fewer but more productive coughs), pseudoephedrine/phenylephrine, acetaminophen, poss codeine
a component of Robitussin DAC, Mucinex and Robitussin AC
single ingredient formulations also available



OTHER USES OF GUAIFENESIN

COUGH, ASTHMA
anecdotal support for these usages but Cochrane review finds the evidence for guaifenesin "ambiguous:

small double-blind placebo-controlled found it reduced dysmenorrhea but not significantly

SINGERS
"wonder drug" promote secondary mucosal secretion in resp sys
secondary mucus = thinner, lubricating mucus on vocal folds when they are healthy
used in extremes of weather (very wet or very dry), after flying, during mild allergies
only source is pop article, no science

ANALGESIC EFFECT
neuro properties known in late 1940's
skeletal muscle relaxant
possible inhibition of platelet aggregation
used as anesthetic in horses and llamas, less hemolytic than propanediols, more water soluble
