It's a realistic plan that gives specific foci for certain periods of the presidency. It is imperative for all concerned citizens to begin (if you haven't already) to communicate regularly with their respresentatives. We have a democratic majority in congress and they may be temped to run wild with their own pork barrel projects. We the people need to keep them on track in carefully eliminating the cumulative effects of 8 years of attack on our civil liberties and environment.

I can look back in the history books and see that it wasn't that long ago that the Republican party was home to the most ardent conservationists and environmentalists. Now the party is the leader of the attack on environmental regulation to exploit natural capital for short term profits.

The 104th Congress seemed to really get the ball rolling with the overt attacks on environmental regulations which continues today in a more subversive way. The latest shenanigans from the Bush administration (http://environment.newscientist.com/channel/earth/dn15105-bush-rushes-through-harmful-environment-laws.html)

I'm registered Republican myself, and I'm a tree hugger. I have always been in opposition to the neocons, but the basic principles of fiscal and international conservatism have served us well. Today it is in that direction that the entire nation needs to move. Being a centrist seems conservative relative to the radicalism of our national government. It's all relative.

Two elections ago here in Canada I voted for the Conservatives (the canuck equivalent to the Republicans) and most of my ideology is conservative in relation to fiscal policies and totally on board with government being smaller. Socially I'm a liberal and on the environmental front I'm forced to side with the Democrats as they're the only one's who seem willing to invest any effort in maintaining the systems that sustain us.

I think the time has come for a viable 3rd party that is centrist is nature. Things went crazy here in Canada and we now have 4 parties that split the vote (one being the separatists in Quebec that due to the huge population in that province have a major impact on Federal politics). On this last election I actually cast a ballot for the Green Party. I can't get on board with most of their platform but since I'm in an area that will overwhelmingly vote for the Conservatives I decided to throw my vote to them in hopes of showing dissatisfaction with the current policies.

It's strange, I can look at the politics in democracies and be both inspired and infuriated at the same time. I think the writing is on the wall that at some point I'll wade into this arena to get my views heard but I think I'm still too hot headed...maybe age with temper me, or make me more ornery...both would work in that arena ;o)
