Signed a lease yesterday morning. And about a dozen other papers. One that says I can be fined $250 if I take the batteries out of the smoke detector. Another that says it's my fault if mold grows in the bathroom. I'll be charged $50/hour for any repairs that need to be done. Basically what I have learned is that a renter in this market has no power. And if I did have any power, I just signed it away. I felt violated after going over all the "agreements" I had to sign to get a place to live. And that doesn't even address what I'm paying for another slummy apartment. This is fucked up. But at least I have a home. Suzanne will be here on Friday and probably Friday night will be the first that I spend at the new place. Move the cat on Friday too.

I've been noticing how expensive food is, too. I'm trying to feed myself good food, but I'm not used to spending so much. I'm getting alarmed about money. Hopefully it will pass.

I just came out of anatomy lab, where we reviewed the body parts that we covered on the last three Wednesday mornings. My next class is Organ systems, where we have an exam. I am not fully awake yet. I was up fairly late reviewing, and then had to get up early this morning to make the bus to get here for lab. I missed one bus so I went for a 10 minute walk then came back to the bus stop. I practiced some yoga at the bus stop--a little utanasana, a couple of lunges, and then standing on one leg while holding the foot of the other leg up high. I'm getting to where I can do it---gaining the strength and flexibility in my hips. Bus stop yoga is fine with me.

Now I'm going up to the stinky-feet energy-medicine room to practice some more. I can't review anymore organ systems. At this point I either know it or I don't know it.

The kitten didn't come home last night and wasn't around this morning either. It was raining. I don't know where she is holed up but I hope it is warm and dry. I hope she isn't dead on the road. Suzanne was talking last night about the time she worked in trash pickup, and about picking up dead animals off the road. She made noise about the fact that nobody was contacting the owners of animals even if they had tags on them. I think she probably influenced the system for the better.

Good God, that's a lot of agreements to sign to lease a place. Is this the place with the studio downstairs that you can sublet?

I'm so happy Suzanne is going to be there Friday! It will be nice for you to have some support with everything you're doing.

I hope Shakti has shown up by now.

No, this is not that house. This place is a little 2BR that is walking distance to school and downtown, biking distance to everywhere I need to get to, except the mountains and the rivers. I think Suzanne and I may be making a trip to the coast or the mountains sometime soon. I have been afraid to drive that far with my truck in such poor condition. She hit the road from Flagstaff today---is in northern CA now, visiting. I look forward to her arrival.

Wow - that's a harsh lease... I hope with all you had to agree to that there are
are some protections in there for you as well. Yeesh.

One thing I figure with the price of organic food is that if I'm going to spend an arm and a leg on something, then it should be for the food that goes in my body. I know it's expensive, but your body and your health are worth it.

Bottom line on the lease; he's a scroungy slumlord just like at the last place I lived. I won't ask him to do ANYTHING. I simply need to photographically document what it looks like now, so he can't get me on the other end. Tonight I cleaned up after his workmen. The gas still isn't hooked up. My life has been a challenge ever since I landed here, and it just isn't letting up.

I had a landlord in Chicago that still hasn't given me my deposit back. I moved into the place and it was beyond filthy. Unfortunately I didn't complain or document anything, so he says it wasn't like that. I need to get a lawyer, but it's BS. So definitely document everything. Even if you can beg, borrow or steal a video camera.

Bummer. Are you just going to school down there?

Yes. www.ncnm.edu. I'm studying to be a Naturopathic Doc.

Oh cool... on many levels. Portland's a great town. And awesome that you're studying to be a Naturopath. We need more of those in this country - and more people that give them the respect they're due. Good for you. :) (I'm not a big fan of western medicine)

The coast in Oregon is beautiful but cold. It's a windy drive through the mountains and I bet it would be beautiful this time of year.

I think I prefer strict landlords because they are doing what they can to keep bad tenants out, meaning their properties should be better kept (in theory, I suppose). After my last house I'll never live somewhere that doesn't have a strict lease. Is your new place nice?

Ugh, moving is tough. I know it will get better for you.

My new place is a gooey little dump with ill fitting doors. But it's in a primo location, gets good light, and has ample space for the two of us. I rode my bike to school this morning, across the lovely river, and it took about 10 minutes. Not bad.
