curare = A paralyzing agent composed of alkaloids that affect neuromuscular transmission, the most common alkaloids being curarine and tubocurarine. Used by South American Indians on poison arrows, and also in medicine to produce muscular relaxation. Two vines from which the substance is extracted: Strychnos toxifera (Loganiacea family) and Chondodrendron tomentosum (Menispermacea). gnosticism = late pre-christian or early christian thought & practice distinguished by the notion that matter is evil and emancipation comes through gnosis
