Well I couldn't do it. It was too short notice, and unnecessary. Shakti can stay here for a couple more weeks, and I think I want her here. She's good for me. Calming. Pleasant. Beautiful. I'm considering how much money I'd have to make in the moving sale to earn her transition. Maybe ... but it is good to know that I have a friend who will gladly take her in. I checked out my friend's new apartment today, and as long as Shakti can figure out to stay off the fast road she'll make it. There is a stream of traffic not far from the apartment. The kitten doesn't know about fast cars because she's been here at the end of the road. For now she is here at the Barn, playing in plastic bags and tormenting the neighbor's dogs. And my heart is happy. I was feeling terribly sad about taking her away today, and realized that I didn't have to. Not yet.

I know you are all set and everything and have an apartment near school and a room mate and all, but I am amazed at the deposit for a cat that your landlord wants. Sounds like you are dealing with a big property management firm. I am quite certain you could find a place that would let you have a cat without any deposit at all beyond the usual deposit. But I guess it doesn't matter now since your plans are already made.

The cat seems to bring you great joy and comfort and though you make much of her "only" being a pet, you are going to miss her a lot. I am sorry you can't take her with you.

My girlfriend who is taking her is willing to give her up again when I find a more suitable place to live. I am dealing with a large property management company, and they stink. I wish I were there already and could make the personal connections that it takes to find a really good rental. But for one year I'm doing this apartment thing. After that I will begin to find my way among the people of the city. I will miss Shakti, but I hope to get her back someday....

I am so glad to know you can get her back once you find suitable housing. I'm hoping you did not sign a year long lease or anything. Most places around here rent month to month. But big property management companies play by different rules.

I haven't signed a lease yet, but I will have to sign for a year. I'm OK with spending a year in one place, even under a property management co. It's close to school and reasonably priced. But if you know of someone close to NCNM who needs a housemate, I can ditch this current plan....I've not signed yet. Where should I look for a month to month deal that doesn't charge limbs for bringing a cat? I've tried Craigslist and the Willamette Weekly. So far no cigar.

What range of rent are you looking to pay? I don't know how much time you have but I can look around real quick to see what is available. How close to school do you want to be? Do you need to be on the SW side of town or are you willing to do close in (near downtown) SE?

Hi! Sorry I am so slow to reply: my yard sale was today. I'm wiped out. My budget is small, that's why I don't want to throw down for a solo place right away. I want monthly rent under $400 and that's why I'm willing to split a place. I think you sent me some craigslist findings too....thanks for your efforts. I haven't looked at them yet.

I want to be inside a 7-mile radius circle from the school, and SE would be fine. I have a feeling I'll end up living in Sellwood, because it appears to be my kind of a neighborhood----old, run down, maybe a little cheaper, but with that charm.

Which part of town do you live in?

From: [identity profile] labyris.livejournal.com
I live in an SW neighborhood named Hillsdale. It is just a little bit closer to downtown than Multnomah. I have kept looking, not really certain what you want, and have discovered at this time of year the rental market is really tight. Lots of students coming back to town looking for places to live. I will focus on looking at shares now. I did see a few but the people seemed kind of young. Do you have an age range? I also have looked on a few bulletin boards, but haven't seen anything. I happen to be going over to Sellwood area tomorrow. There is a New Seasons there (natural foods etc grocery store similar to Whole Foods on a smaller scale (local) and I will look at their bulletin board, too. It is really a shame than you can't come here first and look around in person so that you can know what it is and where it is (and meet potential housemates). 7 mile radius is do-able, I think and would allow you a pretty big area of choice. I will continue to keep my eyes open. When are you moving here (when do you need a place to actually move into?)

I'm 41 and confess that I have a certain distaste for the drama and ignorance of youth. It's fine from a distance, but up close and long term I find it awful. That last place you found is as perfect as I could possibly imagine. I like Sellwood because I want to be ON THE RIVER if I can.....the dock and boat space were big attractions in my mind.

I need a place to crash 9/1. A few days earlier wouldn't hurt, but 9/1 for sure. Thanks a lot for your thoughts and research! I am willing to live just about anywhere for the first year, and once I am there I will begin looking for my dream home. I don't expect to find it on the first try.

I've noticed that Craigslist share listings have increased a lot in the last several days. I think this is because people have secured apartments, houses, etc. and are now looking for housemates, etc.

I hope you both email and call the fellow who had the Sellwood listing near the river. Maybe just maybe that one will work out for you.

Hello! I have a treasure of a house a block away from Sellwood Park, The Springwater Corridor and the Oaks Bottom bike trails and wildlife refuge and now we need to find 1 more roommate to fill this wonderful house!

About the house: it's all hardwood floors, floor to ceiling windows, there's 3 common areas to kick it in, there's a great back yard that's perfect for BBQing and garden, a hammock and a nice big outside table, the family room has a wonderful wood stove and there are 2 bathrooms, one fully equipped with washer and dryer too! This is a wonderful neighborhood, everything is within walking distance including New Seasons (natural food store) and QFC and basically anything else you may need and the area generally feels safe and friendly.

About me: independent, outgoing, friendly, athletic (tennis anyone?), openminded, relatively creative (i work in film and fashion), eco-friendly, drug free (and would like the same), easygoing, humanitarian and equal rights oriented, outdoorsy, gym bunny health nut type.

About roommate #2: shares the bathroom with you, athletic, open-minded, talkative. Likes to: drink coffee, watch the news, hike, listen to music, make yummy, healthy food, try new hobbies.

**If this sounds like it may be an interesting possibility, please get in touch and we'll talk!

***side note: We definitely have cats so please, if you are even slightly allergic, it's just not going to work out***

Rent: $433 per room + 1/3 monthly utilities
Deposit: $433

Like is this within your range and time frame? It is a great SW lcoation pretty close to downtown, lots of buses and also not far by bike. Would be uphill on the way back but the buses take bikes on them . . .

I believe that the kitty has done you a world of good. I'm almost ready to send you a check for 600 bucks so you can keep the little bugger with you. Even though we talked about how a city apartment isn't a cat's ideal world, I still think it's worth pursuing the thought of holding on to her. But I also recognize the headache and heartache involved with the move, so I just wish you luck. Hang on to her 'til the very end.

Off topic, why do you have a link to the Oak Ridger on the side there? Are you from Tennessee? (I live like 30 minutes from Oak Ridge)
