Officials recently confirmed that thousands of tubes of Chinese-made toothpaste containing diethylene glycol (DEG) were shipped to hospitals and correctional facilities in the Southwest, revealing that the distribution of the tainted products was more widespread than previously thought. In a rare statement, Chinese officials guaranteed the safety of these and other Chinese exports, such as recently confiscated fish and melamine-tainted wheat gluten.
