.....keeps the Doctor away.....

It's old news, I know. But new research keeps coming out to explain WHY and how apples are good for you. The most nutritious and high fiber part of the apple is: the skin. Apple consumption has been shown to fight cancer, aid digestion, reduce asthma in children when pregnant mothers eat apples, and decrease risk of lung cancer, heart disease and stroke.

How long has it been since you ate an apple? (Me: weeks...)

Much to tell, actually. I've been bicycling like mad this spring and summer so far and hadn't been lifting for about two years (longest break in my lifting since I was 19). So my knees started getting very angry about 5-5 weeks ago and I got right in to PT with the guy who fixed my torn rotator cuff. He is seriously buffing up my legs and I LOVE it. I mean, cycling has gotten them pretty big and strong, he is just evening out the strength to other muscles as well. Knees are getting happier by the week. Which is good because I'm leaving my job in three weeks and am going to ride my bike for the next year at least! First the Great Divide trail from Canada to Mexico and then... Africa. Yow.

Lots of change happening all around. When are you moving north?

Excellent! I am proud of you now that I hear you are going to take a break and ride ride ride. It is good for the soul to take such breaks from time to time. My next big break will be after I finish school----to assess where I want to set up my practice.

Is it Dr Toner who's buffing you out? I heard more good things about him out of the blue from someone yesterday.

I move in August. I am really looking forward to it! If you ever pass through Portland, please do look me up!

Toner keeps my back and neck in shape for sure, but for physical therapy I'm seeing Mark Statham. He's an athlete and is buff and loves to buff other people up when they want to. He's also going to show me ways of keeping my knees happy when I'm out in the middle of nowhere without weights & machines. Good guy, he is.

I gave up on my Master's for now and may end up going back to something else eventually. Actually, later on I'd like to get a bachelor's in exercise science and work with middle-aged/older populations who have never exercised, especially women, and get them loving it. I think I could do well and really enjoy that. But that's later.

I'll definitely look you up if I get back to Portland.

That's a tough population you'd like to help! What is it that would bring these never-exercised people to you? Besides your personal example of health, that is....

Very creative marketing! I've thought about this a lot, and I would take the approach I used when offering computer training in New Mexico. Offer half-day seminars for a low price to people interested in feeling better and getting healthier. Market the seminars personally and with fliers in places where these people live and work. Once I get them to a seminar there will be a certain percentage that will want one-on-one attention. I will change their lives and show them it can be fun and give real results. Older people generally like me and are not intimidated by me. I feel confident it will work. I've made people who hated computers love them, I can do it with exercise and nutrition in the same way: hand-holding. It will be rewarding.
