This guy--Gavin C Schmitt--has a better understanding of modern world events than most. I need to read him more carefully. I found him because he commented on the fact that I put the wrong picture up on the Ron Paul post. He's on LJ, let me go find his handle....

Edit: unlocked. Also, GCS's handle is [livejournal.com profile] gavin6942

You don't have to lock this entry... I fully appreciate free advertising.

And thanks, by the way... I take pride in my interest in world events, and it means a lot to me when someone notices. I need the encouragement. Otherwise I give in to peer pressire and write the essays that get the most hits (which, sadly, is stupid shit like Tom Cruise's preferred snack at Dairy Queen).

Fuck the most hits. I don't care to find out about Tom Cruise or Dairy Queen. I think you'll find there are more of us out here like you than you thought at first. And it's clear to me that you read a lot and have a good synthesis way of thinking. I still think you should run for office. You're cuter than Ron Paul. Maybe you can speak better too. At the very least, keep reading and writing!!! We need you. I need you, same as you need me. Otherwise all sane people will go mad.

Up until now I didn't know if you were male or female. After the "cuter" comment, I'm going to guess female...

I definitely intend to run for office at some point. I do not expect to win and frankly don't care if I do. My goal would simply to get into the debates to widen the conversation. (We get so locked into Democrat v. Republican debates, we often don't realize how slim of a difference there is and how there are MANY other ways to look at things.)

I don't care about Tom Cruise, either. It was just a way to get the site higher on Google.

Oh yes!! Busted, I'm female.

It is definitely not easy to get into the debates in any fruitful way unless you are a candidate. And if you run, there is a chance that you could win. There are a heckuva lot of us starving for someone we could really back. Would you be up for that? What if you won?

Just wonderin'...

If I won, I'd have to fulfill my duties. But I suspect I'd only be around one term, because I wouldn't change my views. I don't care about making money, so I'm completely un-buyable.

But yeah, I've thought about running for Congress (as a Representative) just to get in on debates and in the newspaper more. I worked on a campaign last fall (which won), so I have a pretty good idea how that works.

I definitely know the things I WOULDN'T do.

Well, as far as campaigning goes, I wouldn't cold-call people. I was against this from the beginning and told them so.

I did it a few times (made about 1800 calls) and I just didn't feel right about it. For every person who had increased name recognition or had a question or concern addressed, there were five that were very upset that they were being solicited.

So, I wouldn't do that. I'll focus much more on yard signs, because I strongly believe that's what drives most people to vote.

yard signs!!!?

Wow. I must confess, I do look up the unknowns that advertise in my neighborhood. And sometimes I vote for them, if what I find is in line with my values. I think having a truly informative website is key. And I also think travelling and speaking and visiting the locals on their home grounds is important...
