I just went looking around LJ for communities or interesting people and found..... nada.  Where did everybody go?  When did all this nonsense and commercialism show up?  Guess I've not been paying any attention.

I looked under the "find more" button at the top of the screen. How do you find all you great LJ friends?

I found my great LJ friends mostly by reading the comments of my friends-of-friends, and adding them one by one as I decided I liked them. A very few of them are real-life friends.
