Another Russian language user just added me as a friend. I knew that there are a lot of Russians on LJ but until today I didn't know that LJ is playing a part in the efforts of the Russian intelligentsia to share information and circumvent state efforts to control all media. Learned of this thanks to [livejournal.com profile] neptunia67. I hope that LJ can withstand the attacks and continue to serve as a mode of communication for these people.

Things have come a long way since Roman Leibov, a literary scholar and social critic, launched the first Russian-language blog on LiveJournal in early 2001. Ten years later, cyberspace has become a powerful force in Russia for community action. In fact, blogging on LiveJournal.com has become a potent force for checking the corruption and power of the Russian state. Yesterday, this blogging community - which has faced frequent attacks recently - came under an unprecedented "sustained and powerful" attack. At 2 pm (4/5/11?), a massive attack targeted the top 5 blogs on LiveJournal, including Aleksei Navalny's blog (whose has just launched a new crowd-sourcing website called RosPil to combat state corruption). As LiveJournal administrators were responding to this attack, hackers targeted another 30 popular LiveJournal bloggers and communities. The attack - a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS) - was successful in knocking LiveJournal offline.

'Anonymous' is the tongue-in-cheek name used by a large loose knit global association of truth and freedom loving activist hackers who use 'anonymous' hacker tactics to breach the security of large government and corporate systems to gain access to information or launch attacks for a variety of purposes. When a state or corporation launches an attack like DDoS usually some hackers will find and use some vulnerability to let the attacker know they are being watched and that they are capable of countering. The set of techniques that are used leave no internet footprint if they are used wisely and thus the actions are termed 'anonymous'. GOP/TP activists attacked Truthout.org numerous times over the last weeks because their accurate revelations in highly visible journalism are raising the awareness of the American people. The GOP/TP hackers put Truthout out of commission for days, destroying content, re-routing links, changing content... It was a very malicious attack. Truthout is not placing blame but everyone knows. States and big corps are doing more and more of this. It came out last week that some GOP/TP operatives are employing US military security 'contractors' for projects against progressive organizations who are challenging the efforts of deep pocketed conservative organizations.

Soooo.... I was just thinking out loud that maybe the LJ attackers might be due to receive something in kind. If I were young and nerdy I might be inclined to channel my energy into greater knowledge of hacking for The People! ;-)
