Q1: Many people in infectious disease circles are concerned about animal housing practices in countries such as China, where pigs and chickens are housed in close proximity. What are the primary concerns based on generation of new strains of flu? Are these concerns valid and why?

Last night I *finally* finished reading this book: Flu; The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus That Caused It. The last third of the book was less interesting to me than the first part. It followed the stories of many assorted researchers who were trying to recover live virus from bits of frozen bodies that had been buried in the permafrost layer of the northern tundra, or bits of viral genes from samples of lung tissue that had been saved in blocks of parafin by military doctors.

I've been reading Flu; The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus that Caused It because it was the first one of the recommended books on the list that I could find in the NCNM library. It's very interesting. The first half of the book is a history of the 1918 flu, which I knew had happened, but I had not realized how many people died. In the US 1/2 million people died in about 3 months. Worldwide the numbers are less certain, but somewhere between 20 and 100 million. The author of this book, Gina Kolata, seemed to suggest one time that she thought the number of deaths worldwide was more like 40,000.

Yesterday the kitten stayed indoors all day because she was limping and perhaps tired. I was at school, Suzanne stayed home and watched it rain. It rained all day. The first week of school has been stressful, but overall I'm feeling much better than I did last quarter. The main difference is that I have not JUST moved away from my home of 7 years. I am not getting lost in the school building anymore, I know where to go for the things that I need, and I am more realistic about the expectations of me as a student.
