Your kayaking sounds a lot like backpacking, just without needing to hump the weight yourself. You use a tarp instead of a tent? I don't like being eaten by bugs so I always went the tent route.

PS. Do you take any radio gear? Cell phone? If you are going alone in to these places perhaps you should consider obtaining your technician class ham radio license and take a small radio with you. PLBs are cheaper than funerals too. They finally approved 406MHz personal beacons, but I'd have set off an EPIRB in an emergency and they could prosecute me after they saved my life. Just a thought.
