Lunchtime. I'm at school. It's the day that we have Clinic Synthesis, a review of some of the hard skills and knowledge that we will need to pass our GPA2 exams and to practice as physicians. It is really good to review this stuff. Being a secondary in the clinic I am not getting to do a lot of exams, so I need the practice. Next year, when I am a primary, I will get to do more of the exams. I am looking forward to it.

He is a smallish man with high cheekbones, appears to be in his 60's, curly dark hair. Was wearing a black jacket and pants with a maroon shirt, no tie. Modest in demeanor. Direct in speech. He spoke for about an hour then opened the floor to questions. His answers to the questions were the best part of the program. People threw all manner of contradicting science at him, and he shot it down with compassion. I especially loved seeing how he continued to look at the person who asked while he was answering the question. He was very good at connecting. He was very compassionate. He has a clinic in Vancouver BC, established 11 years ago, at which he says "I am not a very good doctor because most of my patients die." He treats addicts. He is involved with a safe injection house opened in a run down area of Vancouver, where addicts can go to administer their drug of addiction with clean needles and medical backup.

I am impressed enough with this doc to consider pursuing a preceptorship with him. Because he lives in Canada, I would need to travel to his area and spend some time there.

Dr. Gabor Maté is the staff physician at the Portland Hotel Society, which runs a residence/harm reduction facility and North America’s only supervised safe-injection site in Vancouver, Canada, home to one of the world’s densest areas of drug users. The bestselling author of four books, we speak to Dr. Maté about his latest, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction, which proposes new approaches to treating addiction through an understanding of its biological and socio-economic roots. Maté also discusses his work on attention deficit disorder and the mind-body connection.
