Obama also walks a fine line. He seems to be trying to bring warring groups together (those favoring abortion versus those who don't comes to mind), and if he comes out seeming to be too in favor of one group or another, he loses the ability to deal with the other side. Which may not satisfy the true advocates of each side, but may nudge other parts of the country into looking at things like gay rights as something to consider logically as part of life rather than screaming one way or another about it.
