A shot that inhibits the pleasurable effects of nicotine from smokers is showing promise midway through testing. The study, presented at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association, tested the effectiveness of NicVAX. It found more than twice as many people given the vaccine over a period of a year stopped smoking compared to those given a placebo. The vaccine is designed to keep nicotine from reaching the brain making cigarettes easier to give up, while letting in a small amount of nicotine to ease withdrawal.
