Lipotropics

LIPOTROPICS
compounds which help catalyse the break down of fat during metabolism in the body
a nutrient that promotes or encourages the export of fat from the liver
necessary for the maintenance of a healthy liver
used for burning exported fat for additional energy
main lipotropics: methionine, choline, insositol
if def fats and bile-->trapped in the liver-->cirrhosis, blocked fat metab
used in weight loss formulas
choline, methionine, inositol

CHOLINE
choline is the major lipotrope in mammals
other known lipotropes imp only insofar as they contribute to the synthesis of choline (Barak, 1973)
choline functions as a methyl donor
required for proper liver function
assists detoxification reactions in the liver
can be synthesized from methionine or serine
however recent evidence indicates that choline is an essential nutrient
vitamin B6 is needed for its function
L-methionine is precursor
forms: Choline bitatrate
choline is part of Milner's protocol for neurotransmitter balance

METHIONINE
essential amino acid containing sulfur
methyl donor
forms: L-Methionine
the major lipotropic compound in humans
body requires more when estrogen levels high
estrogens reduce bile flow through the liver
estrogens increase bile cholesterol levels
methionine helps deactivate estrogens
methionine levels affect amount of sulfur-containing compounds (glutathione)
glutathione and other sulfur-containing peptides (small proteins) critical in detox
high levels of toxic compounds-->higher methionine demand
dietary sources of methionine: eggs 200mg ea, fish 2,000-4,000 mg/lb, meat/poultry 1-2,000 mg/lb, milk 200mg/cup, brazil, pumpking, sesame 1400mg/cut, chick pea 250mg/cup, lentil 240mg/cup, lima 200mg/cup, soy bean 300mg/cup

prevent excess fat buildup in the liver and the body
relieving or preventing fatigue and may be useful in some cases of allergy because it reduces histamine release. Patients with a Sulfa allergy should not take this injection.

INOSITOL
"unofficial" member of the B vitamins
has even been shown to relieve depression and panic attacks
methyl donor
a nutrient belonging to the B vitamin complex
closely associated with choline
aids in the metabolism of fats and helps reduce blood cholesterol
participates in action of serotonin

inositol is depleted by lithium therapy, some say take 500mg tid but not confirmed by science
lithium can trigger or worsen psoriasis, inositol 6g/d x10wks sig improves Li induced psoriasis
http://bastyrcenter.org/content/view/445/
inositol shown effective tx for OCD, panic attacks, some depression
may cause abnormal elevations of mood (mania) in some people
seek medical advice before taking inositol OR lithium!

CARNITINE
a naturally occurring hydrophilic amino acid derivative
produced endogenously in the kidneys and liver
derived from meat and dairy products in the diet
essential role in the transfer of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for beta-oxidation
binds acyl residues and helps in their elimination
decreasing the number of acyl residues conjugated with coenzyme A (CoA)
increases the ratio between free and acylated CoA
deficiency is rare and dt genetic anomalies
low carnitine-->1) cardiomyopathies, 2) hypoketotic hypoglycemic encephalopathy 3) myopathies

MAGNESIUM
forms: oxide, asparate
vasodilator, relaxes bile duct
liver detoxer

B VITAMINS
Vits B6, B12 and folic acid are cofactors

SILYBUM MARINUM
milk thistle, family Asteraceae
methyl donor
supports liver cell growth and regeneration
CONSTITUENTS
-silibinin (silybin, sylimarin I) = hepatoprotective (antihepatotoxic), antioxidant (radical-scavenging agent)-->stabilize/protect membrane lipids of hepatocytes
-silicristin inhibits peroxidase and lipoxygenase
-silidianin is a plant growth regulator
-silymarin (flavonolignane complex of above sili-ingredients) used for Amanitas phalloides (Death Cap) poisoning, also in cerebral edema and acute hepatitis therapy
-potassium nitrate content makes it toxic to sheep & cattle-->methhemoglobinemia

SCIENCE
-2000 study by the AHRQ concluded "clinical efficacy ... not clearly established"
-more recent study did show activity against liver cancers
-2005 Cochrane Review of 13 randomised clinical trials (alc, hep B, hep C) lacked evidence

BETA VULGARIS
sugar beet root

TARAXICUM OFFICINALE
dandelion root

CHIONANTHUS VIRGINICUS
fringe tree bark

CHELIDONIUM MAJUS
herb
celandine
aerial parts used

BETAINE HYDROCHLORIDE
synthetic
a powerful lipotropic
increases gastric acid
C5H12NO2Cl = a source of hydrochloric acid
one study showed fasting people with normal gastric acid levels in the stomach had almost no bacteria in the small intestine, individuals with low levels of hydrochloric acid had some bacterial colonization in the stomach

OPTI LIPOTROPIC
a product in NCNM medicinary
http://www.1cascade.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=7358
ingredients:

ANOTHER LIPOTROPIC PRODUCT: THE SLENDERIZER
"fat burner"
emulsify, transport and convert stored fat into energy
master lymph system and body cleanser
best lipotropics in the proper scientific ratios
four major lipotropic ingredients:
1) Inositol Hexaphosphate-- metabolizes fats and cholesterol, aids in transporting fat in the blood system, combat cancer and help to lower cholesterol levels.
2) DL-Methionine-- amino acid, reduces fat and cholesterol levels, increases dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin (antidepressant)
3) Alpha Lipoic Acid, promotes fat loss by preferentially shunting glucose to muscle cells away from fat cells, also is coenzyme in the metabolic pathway that generates energy in the body, removes heavy toxic metals and protects the liver
4) Chromium picolinate, is a rare nutrient of which 98% of the American population do not get enough in their diet, depleted by high sugar diet, used to tx type 2 DM and IR.

Something I found interesting is that taking a single B Vitamin on its own will make you deficient in all the other B Vitamins. Sucks, right. Cause alotta people go get B12 shots & never realize they are working their way to grey hair, thinning lips or baldness, let alone more stress.. all B Vitamin deficiencies.

One good rule of thumb in looking for & obtaining a *good* complete B Complex is to make sure it has Choline & Inositol in it. Oh ya!

I just looked at my B vit mix (Thorne brand, #5, heavy on B6) and it has choline but not inositol. Do the two have to be together? What's the reasoning? Just curious. I always do appreciate your comments even if it takes me a long time to process them. =-]
