Vocabababble: Pediatric Pathology

anencephaly = no brain, bad way to be born

appropriate/small/large for gestational age

atelectasis = collapsed lung

atresia = absense of an opening (esophageal, duodenal)

bronchiectasis = dilation of part of the bronchial tree dt necrotizing infx

caput succdeaneum = scalp edema where head was pressed against cervix (not serious)

cephalhematoma = hemorrhage into the scalp (not serious)

erythroblastosis fetalis = IgG antibodies bind to RBC's and macrophages kill --> hemolytic anemia

hypospadius = incomplete male genital development, penis not closed, urethra comes out front (ventral) side of shaft anywhere from glans to scrotum "A distal hypospadias may be suspected even in an uncircumcised boy from an abnormally formed foreskin and downward tilt of the glans."

epispadius = ?

intracerebral hemorrhage from dura or brain (serious, muy)

kernicterus = brain damage from neonatal jaundice

meconium ileus = the stuff in the GI tract prior to birth

neonatal period = 1st 4 weeks after birth

neural tube defect - spina bifida = neural tube didn't close, vertebrae didn't fuse, hole in back usually in lumbar or sacral region, may be closed (occulta) or open, 2.6:1,000 worldwide, anencephaly is a kind of neural tube defect, epilepsy meds and folic acid deficiency may cause, seems to be motivator for big push to get women to take folic even if they're not preggers because tube closure happens at day 28 of pregnancy: some not aware yet they are pregnant

perinatal = around the time of birth from 5mos before to 1 mo after

posterm/preterm =

-spadiases

Epispadias = urethra emerging on upper surface of glans or penis shaft (rare)

Hypospadias is an absolute contraindication for circumcision, btw, because the foreskin may be needed for the repair.
