Hawaiian Legislature Expands Naturopathic Scope

--the bill SB420 was vetoed by the governor on July 15
--on July 21 the state legislature rallied with a dominating vote to the contrary
--the state needs more primary care physicians
--this change brings the legal scope of practice up to the standards that we are being taught in school
--scope of practice is broadened with regard to parenteral (IV) therapy, formulary and minor surgery
--the Hawaii Board of Examiners in Naturopathy (HBEN) can decide what prescription drugs ND's can use
--HBEN will also determine standards for IV therapy and minor surgery
--Oregon led the way in allowing NDs this range
--15 states and the District of Columbia, and the United States territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have licensing laws for naturopathic physicians
--naturopathic physicians are required to graduate from a four-year, postgraduate naturopathic medical school and to pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination (NPLEX) in order to receive a license
