I have no idea why, but the first image that popped into my head was that of a naval officer. At least I think it was a naval officer. He is wearing a blue and white uniform with a little hat, and he is quite fetching.

"I would rather live in the second, or fifth, or twentieth weathiest country in the world, and not have to step over people every morning on my way to work, than live in the wealthiest nation on the globe, knowing that our wealth leaves a blazing trail of human wreckage in its wake."

--Me, in 2000, at the peak of the dot-com boom, in response to a co-worker decrying a publicly funded SF clinic for street people as 'the first step toward socialized medicine.'

Amen brotha!
It is astounding, isn't it?
I'm trying to understand the American knee-jerk about "socialized medicine". Why is it such a bad word to so many people??

Canada. UK. A system that lets me make a doctor appointment and not worry whether I can afford it. A system that was caring and concerned when I lost my babies. A system that put my former mother-in-law on an inferior treatment plan for her cancer which she died from. A system that never seems to have enough money to take care of the people. A system that could be beautiful and work well if managed properly.

Yes, please.
