Reinhold Niebuhr once wrote that we are moral people living in an immoral society. That makes sociological sense to me, but it is still sort of a cop out,

Crazy? We are at least szchizophrenic, maybe paranoid (at least our politicians are), maybe "situationally sociopathic" By that i mean that we are capable of caring as long as we are among people who act and think like we do. Outside our comfort zones we become very dangerous.

I'd add narcissistic to the list. And I think what you say about Americans being dangerous outside our comfort zones applies to all humans, all primates, all mammals and probably broader than that.

At least there are other places that are worse! Silver linings, my friend. Still, it is healthy to escape from the America the Greatest bubble from time to time.
