Heinberg's Memo to the #Occupy Movement

His point: we need a new paradigm, because the era of oil-fueled expansion, growth and "progress" is OVER. The new paradigm must involve a sustainable economic model which will be more local.

Note to Capitalists, free traders, etc,, etc.

Do you really want to prove that Karl Marx was wrong?
Accepting "the end of growth" is the only way it can be done.
Some growth is natural and necessary for health.
Economic growth, beyond a certain point
is unhealthy, unnatural growth, like cancerous growth.
I think we reached that point about fifty years ago
Which is probably why so much discussion of the economy
seems pointless and senseless.

Too many people, using too many resources,
and using too much of those resources to compete
is a death sentence for the species.
No, it won't happen tomorrow.
But it will happen.

Yep. It will happen under duress, and at great cost. But it is a law of physics---that an object in motion continues until there is friction or obstruction enough to redirect it, or convert the dynamic energy to another form.... so the dominant paradigm hurtles along with quite a few dissenters in tow, adding all the friction we can.
