Apple products seem to have a pretty long lifespan. That's one thing about the iPod/iPhone - there are SO many killer apps for it. And if you decide to turn off the data service, the device will still work with wireless and for your apps.
I'm going to replace my old Windows laptop with an iMac, probably early next year if I can limp the laptop along for a few more months. Since the Macs can run Windows now and I can get a license through the university for cheap, it'll give me the best of both worlds.
